Sean Ryan

Northwestern Mutual is based in downtown Milwaukee.

Northwestern Mutual has contributed $1.4 million in the fight against childhood cancer through its foundation since launching its new philanthropic initiative one year ago, the company said this week.

The money has helped more than 200 families travel and stay together during their children?s cancer treatments, funded nearly 13,000 hours of research projects and helped ease the hospital experience for children through Alex?s Lemonade Stand Foundation and Starlight Children?s Foundation, the release said.

The Milwaukee-based company will raise more money for Alex?s Lemonade Stand on July 21 through its Roots and Wings Race during its annual convention. It also will announce upcoming pediatric cancer initiatives, including a study to identify the drivers and barriers affecting childhood cancer research and sponsorship of the first Alex?s Lemonade Stand Foundation Young Investigator Summit in October. The summit will provide an opportunity for young grant recipients to interact with pediatric cancer researchers and learn more about the field. The company also will continue to fund community partnerships and activities around childhood cancer in Milwaukee, the release said.
