ODELL, Neb. (AP) ? The Big Indian Recreation Area in southeast Nebraska is scheduled to fully reopen this weekend because the renovation work is finished and the water level is up.
?This is the first time the lake has been full,? Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District assistant manager Scott Sobotka told the Beatrice Daily Sun (http://bit.ly/13B9IqL). ?The spring rains filled it up, and we?re ready to go.?
The recreation area is about six miles east of Odell, in southern Gage County.
Since June 2010, workers have removed more than 100,000 cubic yards of sediment that had settled in the lake since it was established in 1972. The lake was drained and closed to boaters and beachgoers. Though the project was completed in less than a year, low rainfalls prevented the lake from naturally refilling.
District land resources specialist Tyler Weishahn said the only thing that will lower the lake depth now is evaporation.
?They built sediment dikes that allow that water to kind of level out, and there?s a tube that we?ve closed now,? Weishahn said. ?Basically, what?s in the lake is in the lake, and it can?t escape down the channel or anything like that.?
The area?s south gates will be opening, allowing access to the boat ramp and beach areas. Access to the archery range and to a camping area on the northeast side have been available already this year
The lake has been stocked with bass, bluegill and catfish.
