Protesters celebrated in a southern Chinese city after the government scrapped plans for a nuclear processing plant. The complex in Guangdong province was planned for uranium conversion and enrichment.
The proposed 230-hectare complex in the heart of China?s Pearl River delta industrial heartland had also sparked unease in neighbouring Hong Kong and Macau.
One local resident commented: ?The government says it will cancel this project. We support the government in cancelling this project.?
Another man said: ?The public calls for the cancellation of this project. This is the public opinion.?
An unidentified Jiangmen government spokesman said: ?This project is at an initial stage. But it has not passed the social stability assessment.?
The swift decision comes after hundreds of demonstrators marched to city offices on Friday demanding an end to the nuclear project.
Authorities in China are increasingly sensitive to local protests about environmental issues. Plans for several major petrochemical plants have been cancelled after demonstrations.
