What kind of advice could you give to guys who want to get into a long distance relationship? Especially for guys who fear or are scared of honesty and opening up?
I think that?s a really challenging predicament if the guy fears being honest with his partner. It?s fair to say that the long distance relationship is not starting from a good platform because I think being honest with each other is the first critical step to having success with a long distance relationship. What I mean by that is, it?s important that both partners are clear on what they want to get out of a long distance relationship. There are a variety of different options within a long distance relationship.
You can have a long distance exclusive relationship; you can have a long distance relationship where you acknowledge for whatever reason through time and space you can?t be together right now, and so you?re going to make a commitment that when you guys do get the opportunity to get back together, that you will be back in a relationship.
But in the meantime, you have the freedom to explore, having sexual experiences with other people. So just knowing exactly what you want to get out of it and making sure that it?s exactly the same as the other person is the key. Because I think that?s where long distance relationships fall down ? when one partner wants something, and the other partner assumes that they want something else.
So being honest and having great communication is step 1.
Step 2 is recognizing what you?re going to be able to give to each other because ultimately, that?s a big part of what relationships are all about. What can you bring to the other person?s life? Now in some cases people may be happy with just having someone that they can talk to, that they feel understands them, that they feel will be able to listen to them.
Being able to acknowledge what you both want to get out of a relationship, and what you can both bring to the relationship, is really important. The final tip that I would say with long distance relationships is be really clear on when you?re going to be able to spend time together.
So if you know that from the start, you can make a decision on whether it?s going to be feasible to be in a relationship. Are you going to be able to see each other every second week? Are you going to be able to see each other once a month? Are you going to be able to see each other twice a year? If you?re clear about that, then two things can happen.
First, you can make an educated decision, knowing in advance what to expect from the other person, and you can decide whether a long distance relationship is going to be a good fit. The second thing is, you can start to prepare to make sure that when you do get the opportunity to see each other, and the opportunity to spend time with each other, that you can completely maximize that time.
So what I?ve found with the long distance relationships that I?ve been in, is that they have been successful if we?re essentially able to build up all the positive experiences of what it would be like if we were spending everyday together; and then we?re able to really just pump all those positive emotions into the confines of a weekend.
I?ve found that was actually great. For me it was a really good balance where I felt like I had the time to be able to be by myself and work on my aspirations and goals through the week; but when we got together through the weekend, we?re out and we?ll basically give 100% of ourselves to the other person without any distractions.
