????????????? The dogs will once again have their day on Saturday, Sept. 10, when they take over the Kennedy Pool for the eighth-annual Dog Swim.
??????????????? Slated for noon-3 p.m., the swim offers excitement comparable to a swift lick in the face for pets and pet owners alike.
Last year more than 200 dogs paddled, dove, shook and sunbathed as they made the Kennedy pool their own playground for the day.
??????????????? The event is organized and sponsored by Trenton Parks & Recreation, which is anticipating an even bigger turnout this year, as popularity continues to grow via woof of mouth.
??????????????? Residents are encouraged to bring their favorite four-legged friend for a refreshing dip in the pool. There will be fun games and wacky contests throughout the afternoon, including best swimsuit (for the dog), people-pet lookalike, fetch and jump the farthest contests, to name a few.
??????????????? In addition, area groups, organizations and businesses will be on hand to share their pet-friendly information and merchandise beginning at 11 a.m.
??????????????? Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Joann Perna said the Dog Swim is traditionally the last day the pool is open for the year. It will be closed to humans more than a week before, and the chemical content of the pool will be allowed to degrade and be at a point that it is safe for the pets by the time the Dog Swim is held.
??????????????? Trenton veterinarian Gregory Raspbury, owner of Village Animal Healthcare, will be on site to answer questions and provide doggy first aid. New this year, the Trenton Fire Department will be on hand to offer basic first-aid training for dogs in partnership with Dr. Raspbury.
??????????????? The Fire Department also will be showing clips from a DVD by the American Red Cross on different types of first aid and rescue techniques. A more in-depth class will be offered later in the year for those who are interested. The Fire Department?s own Sparky the Fire Dog will be there to play with the other dogs as well. CPR demonstration for the dog owners is also in the works.
??????????????? The fee for the swim is $5 per dog; owners are free with their pet.
Each dog must have its own handler. A $5 fee also will be charged for spectators without a pet. Participants can pre-register at the Trenton Recreation Department, located at Trenton City Hall, Mondays through Fridays, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. On-site registration will begin at 11 a.m.
??????????????? Eligibility rules are simple: dogs must be licensed and owners must show proof of Rabies vaccination and prepared for clean-up duty. Bortetella vaccination is recommended. For more information call (734) 675-7300.
