PGT: Tiger 'encouraged' despite struggles

Every time Tiger Woods was interviewed this week about his goals at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational after an 11-week layoff, the world No. 28 was consistent in his end goal.

On Tuesday: ?Same as always, hasn?t changed, expectation level,? Woods said, implying his goal to win.

On Thursday after an opening 68: ?I thought about winning going in.?

Getting into the weekend after a Friday round of 71: ?Why show up at a tournament if you?re not there to win? There?s no reason to come,? he said. Reminded he was coming back from a lengthy, injury-induced absence, he replied, ?I?m not other guys.?

Then after a week-worst 2-over 72 on Saturday, Woods realized his chances had faded. The attitude ? facade or not ? seemed to change from a drive to win to simply posting a good round on Sunday.

He said, ?I?ve just got to put together a good round and let it build. That?s something I haven?t done yet. I?ve only played three rounds. Unfortunately I?m not there battling with a chance to win, but I can still post a good round tomorrow.?

After another odd round on Sunday, though better than Saturday by two, Woods said he fell short of his goal but felt pleased to get back inside the ropes.

?Absolutely encouraged. I hadn?t played. I mean, this is my first tournament since, what, April, so it?s been a while,? he said.

The bar got a little lower between Tuesday and Sunday, but maybe that was to be expected as Woods learned where his game is while in the heat of competition. In brief, it?s inconsistent everywhere.

Off the tee, he was tied for last in the field in terms of accuracy.

He hammered the ball tee-to-green, but could not control it as much as he would like. The ball seems to go straighter than it ever has in Woods? career, taking away from his inherent advantage to shape and create shots.

His putts were great at times and seemingly made absent-mindedly at others.

It was a mixed bag, for sure. But at least Woods had a bag on Sunday, which is more than he was able to say since early April. Tiger did not perform well on the Rory McIlroy Scale, which was top-20, but it wasn?t bad from a guy who just got going again. The question entering the PGA Championship next week is the same as it has been since the 2010 Masters: how long will it take for Woods to get going consistently and somewhat like his old self?
