6 Ways PS Vita Can Succeed & Dominate Mobile Gaming
?
We now know that ?Sony?s new handheld PS Vita will grace the world. In Japan this year, and early 2012 for westerners. Games Con 2011 in Europe is the current place where Sony is now showing off more Vita news. After its unveiling during E3 2011 it?s not secret that the capabilities are pretty cool. It has multi-touch functionality, connectivity options, powerful hardware, and most of all the ability to give developers new ways to have us playing. Sony is being aggressive with this handheld taking a much more focused, and in many respects bullish stand point. In light of the progress that devices such as Ipad 2, and what Android tablets are doing for gaming. What will it take for Sony to succeed?not just against these new threats, but the mighty Nintedo, and their?3DS platform will be villigance on Sony?s part.?. ?As the mobile gaming space grows can the Playstation Vita come out victorious?
?The Sexy 6
1. A developers/Testers club- A developers/testers club can?be select developers, and testers who are a mix of first party, second party, and 3rd party developers who will work together to bridge the gap on games that take advantage of the PS Vita. Think of this as a more complete, and professional PS Vita Lab. Similar to what Microsoft has done with Kinect Labs. The logic is that Sony needs to consistently find ways that are gaming related to make the PS Vita stand out from other mobile gaming devices. Sony may not believe in ?Homebrew?, but they are going to have find a way to create new franchises that are built from the ground up for Vita. ?Angry Birds? didn?t exist two years ago, and if a developer walked into a development pitch meeting with that as their game for the PSP. I highly doubt it would have been green lit. Now you can?t get bigger than that game on mobile. Vita has the pedigree to do even better titles. Sony has to create the the foundation for this to happen.
2. A PS Vita Home Tab- With so many games, and Sony constantly giving gamers options to do things on their platform. Sony would do well to offer PS Vita games that can be played on the PS3 in a demo format. In fact since there is networking intergration being talked about then access should go both ways on the platforms. What this will do is constantly inform gamers who own a PS3 that may or may not own a Vita it?s worth checking out. Home is a great way to know what the platform has, and give that hub a reason to continue to exist well into Vita lifespan. You can add the social networking features (Keep reading more on this) . Home still has potential, and Vita must create?a nice?transition?to push it. I liking it to a coming attractions that?s interactive though.
3. PS Vita Social- The tag lines for PS Vita are; ?encounter?, ?connect?, ?discover?, ?share?, and ?play?. How do you make this work Sony? Well we know gamers are playing all over the place on many device platforms. So the encounter aspect should be done on a social level. From Twitter to Tumblr. Get gamers to connect where they are, and let them discover by sharing content, data, and ideas. Raptr as a social gaming platform online is the first of many that can aid gamers in knowing what they are playing. The idea is that the PS Vita is built for social networking, and to be in our gaming conversation today, Sony must?substantially?make this claim true. Sure they will have the apps. Sony will now need a strategy where gaming is constantly social with these communities. They have to do it in a way that is current, and fun. A social community is defined?by how people use it. In what form will Vita?s community become is built on how Sony approaches building it?s foundation, and support. Building a viable place is only established with open, and?consistent?attention to the community.
4. Use All Features- Nothing makes a platform worthless than when a publisher, and developers don?t push its potential. With all the features slated for?Vita, the sales, and marketing talk will make everything sound lush, and ohhhh aaahhhed to death. If its in there, then let?s see what it does in real-time, with real world ramifications. Make sure that head tracking is fun even if it?s for little daily distractions. Give us mini games for face detection. I bet you could make a built-in game with that alone where you could send other gamers funny face messages, or a puzzle game. Since there is a new music player, can we use it for own in-game soundtracks? I use the Xbox 360 feature to it?s fullest. Playing lot?s of great indie music that is better than what you hear on radio. With Sony having music labels how about trying music from their different catalog. There are tons of marketing, and promo tie ins you can do without being annoying to gamers. ?Point being, make use of every feature that will not give us a reason to question ?What does this thing really do??.
?
5. Competitive Gaming- PS Vita has?the potential for becoming the best handheld ever for competitive gaming. No one has even touched that niche in this space.?With its social gaming capabilities this is something that can bring the community together. Enhance the feel for what Vita gaming can be, use many of its features right, and bring in the professional competitive gaming community. Think about all the sponsors, and advertisers who want in on gaming. ?Sony could really carve out a niche on Vita with this focus alone. It?s more?convenient?to have players carrying their Vita?s to competitions than desktops. I?m just saying.
6. Smaller Games That Sell For less- This is the biggest issue that Sony must contend with. Value? With the Apple tablets, Android devices, and mobile phones becoming more powerful for gaming. This presents not just Sony, but anyone getting into the mobile space. The Vita will not survive if it does not have a range of games that address price. You can get fun titles now for no more than $5.00 U.S, 7? U.K. on mobile devices. Consumers in this economic climate all over the world are addressing their lifestyle needs. Gaming is part of that. Gamers are going to go where they can great, fun, and?entertaining?content that meets their needs. Relying?solely?on brand allegiance will be an act of ?Seppuku?. In order Sony to do well with Vita when games there will cost close to that of PS3 and Xbox 360 console games. Again the best way for Sony to discuss this issue is by creating a developer club, offering tools, and incentives for games that can be played on the go, are economical, and vastly different from what you will get from other mobile platforms. Product, and service?differentiation?is paramount. Creating titles that can cost anywhere between $25-$30 is also a great space, but again there has to be built in value. Apple, and Android are banking on Sony getting this wrong. The adoption rate, and cyclical nature of mobile devices says that the Vita will be outmatched the very next year after its release. These companies are positioning their brands for this takeover now. Pay attention, and act like competition is eating off your plate?Sony.
