UK MPs see online gambling of behaving like Starbucks, Gaming ...

January 31, 2013

Starbucks and UK online gamblingThe UK Treasury?s proposed 15% point of consumption tax for UK-facing online gambling firms was the hot topic of discussion at a parliamentary hearing in London on Tuesday. Remote Gambling Association president Clive Hawkswood was on hand to represent the viewpoints of most of the UK gambling companies that shifted their online operations from the UK to Gibraltar and white-list jurisdictions like Alderney, Antigua and the Isle of Man. Members of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee grilled Hawkswood on the gambling firms? stated opposition to the proposed Gambling (Licensing and Advertising) Bill, which will require all UK-facing companies to acquire a Gambling Commission-issued license, to which the Treasury proposes to couple with the 15% tax and take effect by December 2014.

The MPs suggested the gambling firms?s sole reason for opposing the plans was to avoid paying more tax, and more than one MP drew comparisons with recent revelations that coffee giant Starbucks paid less than ?9m of UK corporation tax over the past 14 years. According to GamblingCompliance, Hawkswood acknowledged that the online gambling firms viewed the 15% tax rate as ?slow death,? but pointed out that these companies weren?t exclusively UK-facing, and as international companies, they chose their base of operations based on what??makes best commercial sense.? When MPs pointed out that Stoke-based Bet365 had chosen to retain its online operations in the UK, yet somehow managed to continue turning a profit, Hawkswood said Bet365? could be more successful under a less punishing tax regime.

The Committee also heard written submissions from interested parties, including William Hill, which suggested a 5% tax rate would be the way to go, while Paddy Power suggested a range between 5-8%. The submission from the reliably combative Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association (GBGA) suggested Gibraltar would be compelled to file a lawsuit if the UK?s draft legislation is approved. The suit would accuse the UK of reforming their regulations for the primary purpose of boosting their tax receipts, which would run contrary to EU edicts. With 12% of its total workforce dependent on the online gambling industry, Gibraltar could face the same fate Antigua suffered as a result of the US invoking its protectionist measures.

The GBGA referred to the UK draft legislation as ?misconceived and unwarranted on any objective analysis? of both the industry and the consumer protections offered by the current scheme. Indeed, Gibraltar notes that the UK draft law proposes no enforcement measures, which would encourage UK punters to seek out better priced online options from operators in jurisdictions not subject to the UK tax nor the remonstrations of UK regulators, creating the exact opposite scenario to the one the UK claims to be striving to achieve. Members of the Gambling Commission and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport will offer their own evidence to the Committee on Feb. 12.

Official: Florida vs South Carolina, Wednesday, 8:00 PM, SEC Network

The South Carolina Gamecocks are the next team to test themselves against the league leading, and currently ranked # 4, Florida Gators. This will be the first of a slate of games where we will see our guys play 4 out of 5 in the confines of the O-Dome. The Rowdy Reptiles are going to get a good workout over the next couple of weeks with the last of these 5 being the Kentucky Wildcats. It should be a really exciting time as they set the Dome rocking and even get the older fans involved.

The Gamecocks come in with an overall record of 12-7 including 2-4 in conference play. Their best win to date has been a 21 point win over Arkansas in their last outing. However all of their losses have been close ones so we can expect a team that is going to fight hard for an upset. There's not a whole lot that can be said with respect to our game at this point as once again it is a matter of the Gator players focusing on the team at hand. If they do and continue to play like they have been then it should be another win similar to the last few.

For those who don't know, Prather is not scheduled to play this game but there is a chance he may be ready by Saturday.

Go Gators!!!!!

Pregame notes are available here

You can listen to Mick and Mark here

What can go wrong when computer simulations are applied outside their original context

In an article about to be published in EPJ Plus, Daan Frenkel from the University of Cambridge, UK, outlines the many pitfalls associated with simulation methods such as Monte Carlo algorithms or other commonly used molecular dynamics approaches.

The context of this paper is the exponential development of computing power in the past 60 years, estimated to have increased by a factor of 1015, in line with Moore's law. Today, short simulations can reproduce a system the size of a bacterium.

The author outlines diverse examples of issues arising when seemingly simple simulation methods are not applied with the due level of care. For example, simulations of small-scale systems, such as cubic boxes representing a unit cell as part of a crystal or liquid crystal, display effects that are linked to the fact that the sample is of finite size. Therefore, these simulations can only imitate, not reproduce, macroscopic effects unless effects that occur at microscopic scale, such as surface effects, are effectively removed. This is typically done by using periodic repetition of a small system in all directions.

Frenkel also focuses on methods that, at first blush, appear reasonable, but are flawed and are akin to attempting to compare apples and oranges. For example, computing a mechanical property of a systemsay the potential energyusing a Monte Carlo simulation, which can be based on thermal averages, does not allow us to compute the thermal properties of such a systemsuch as entropyin terms of thermal averages. Finally, the article also takes great care to debunk common myths and misconceptions pertaining to simulations, for instance, newer simulation methods are not necessarily better than older ones.

NASA to launch ocean wind monitor to space station

Jan. 29, 2013 ? In a clever reuse of hardware originally built to test parts of NASA's QuikScat satellite, the agency will launch the ISS-RapidScat instrument to the International Space Station in 2014 to measure ocean surface wind speed and direction.

The ISS-RapidScat instrument will help improve weather forecasts, including hurricane monitoring, and understanding of how ocean-atmosphere interactions influence Earth's climate.

"The ability for NASA to quickly reuse this hardware and launch it to the space station is a great example of a low-cost approach that will have high benefits to science and life here on Earth," said Mike Suffredini, NASA's International Space Station program manager.

ISS-RapidScat will help fill the data gap created when QuikScat, which was designed to last two years but operated for 10, stopped collecting ocean wind data in late 2009. A scatterometer is a microwave radar sensor used to measure the reflection or scattering effect produced while scanning the surface of Earth from an aircraft or a satellite.

NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have studied next-generation replacements for QuikScat, but a successor will not be available soon. To meet this challenge cost-effectively, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and the agency's station program proposed adapting leftover QuikScat hardware in combination with new hardware for use on the space station.

"ISS-RapidScat represents a low-cost approach to acquiring valuable wind vector data for improving global monitoring of hurricanes and other high-intensity storms," said Howard Eisen, ISS-RapidScat project manager at JPL. "By leveraging the capabilities of the International Space Station and recycling leftover hardware, we will acquire good science data at a fraction of the investment needed to launch a new satellite."

ISS-RapidScat will have measurement accuracy similar to QuikScat's and will survey all regions of Earth accessible from the space station's orbit. The instrument will be launched to the space station aboard a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft. It will be installed on the end of the station's Columbus laboratory as an autonomous payload requiring no interaction by station crew members. It is expected to operate aboard the station for two years.

ISS-RapidScat will take advantage of the space station's unique characteristics to advance understanding of Earth's winds. Current scatterometer orbits pass the same point on Earth at approximately the same time every day. Since the space station's orbit intersects the orbits of each of these satellites about once every hour, ISS-RapidScat can serve as a calibration standard and help scientists stitch together the data from multiple sources into a long-term record.

ISS-RapidScat also will collect measurements of Earth's global wind field at all times of day for all locations. Variations in winds caused by the sun can play a significant role in the formation of tropical clouds and tropical systems that play a dominant role in Earth's water and energy cycles. ISS-RapidScat observations will help scientists understand these phenomena better and improve weather and climate models.

The ISS-RapidScat project is a joint partnership of JPL and NASA's International Space Station Program Office at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, with support from the Earth Science Division of the Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

Despite revival, US economy still on life support

12 hrs.

After four years of government prodding ? from federal stimulus spending to the Fed?s historic easy-money policies ? the U.S. economy finally?is showing signs of sustainable growth.?

But?it?s not out of the woods yet.

The hopeful signals are coming from a broad range of indicators - from upbeat reports on home and car sales to business investment and manufacturing orders. Those reports have raised hopes that the ongoing move to balance the federal budget with tax increases and spending cuts won?t dampen the emerging recovery.

?We think the U.S. economy will be able to power through that this year ? even with the drag,? said
?Tony Fratto, an economist at Hamilton Place Strategies and former Treasury official under President George W. Bush.

But when Federal Reserve officials wrap up?their two-day meeting Wednesday, they?re widely expected to continue to keep their foot on the gas pedal by extending their aggressive program of holding interest rates near zero.?

Though some critics think it may be time for the central bank to begin winding down its epic easy-money strategy, Fed policy makers have already promised to stick with it until the unemployment rate falls below 6.5 percent. ?

The halting pace of the recovery is expected to be highlighted Wednesday when the government takes its initial estimate of the growth of gross domestic product for the last three months of 2012. Analysts polled by Reuters expect the report to peg expansion at a weak 1.1 percent annual rate, down from a 3.1 percent rate in the previous three months.

But a basket of separate reports this week is expected to confirm the marked pickup in growth as the year drew to a close.?

Orders for durable goods jumped by 4.6 percent in December, the?Commerce Department said Monday, more than double what private forecasters had expected. Though many business managers complained loudly that uncertainty in Washington had left them unwilling to take on new workers, they were busy investing in new plant and equipment to keep up with rising demand from customers.

?CEOs may have been worrying about falling off the cliff but demand for big-ticket items still soared,? said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic?Advisors.

The report followed wider signs of a broad pickup in demand throughout the economy. Rising home sales, which began to pick up in the second half of last year, continue to push prices higher, helping convince reluctant buyers and sellers that the market has finally bottomed out. ?

Car sales jumped 16 percent in the fourth quarter of last year compared to the previous year, and are on pace for another annual sales increase. Automakers will report monthly sales on Friday and are expected to post another month of robust demand. The prolonged sales downturn during the Great Recession left behind an aging fleet of cars and trucks that buyers are now replacing. ?

Despite a lackluster holiday shopping season, overall retail sales in the last three months of the year were up 6 percent from a year ago.?Manufacturers are also seeing a solid pickup in orders for new goods. Lower energy costs -- the result of an ongoing boom in natural gas production?--?have helped them win bids against low-cost foreign competitors.?

But unemployment remains stubbornly high, as the latest reading, due this Friday, is expected to show. Economists are looking for a net gain of just 163,000 new jobs for the latest month. That?s barely enough to keep up with population growth and not enough to move the needle of the unemployment rate which forecasters expect to remain stuck at 7.8 percent.

To be sure, the Fed?s easy money policy is helping some households ? especially those with investments in the stock market. With interest rates at near zero, investors looking for a positive return have few alternatives.?

Stocks are up 15 percent since June. In January alone, investors sank $55 billion in new cash into stock mutual funds and exchange-traded funds, the biggest monthly inflow on record, according to TrimTabs Investment Research.?

Fears of a financial meltdown in Europe have faded. Last year?s worries about a sharp slowdown in Asia have eased for now.?And despite continued threats of political disruption in Washington, the long-running battle over the federal budget seems to be inching toward resolution.

On Monday, credit rating agency Fitch said last week?s deal to delay suspension of the country's debt limit have reduced the odds that it might strip United States of its AAA rating. Another rating agency, Standard and Poor?s, cut the U.S. debt rating one notch after the last debt ceiling debacle in July 2011 pushed the Treasury to the brink of defaulting on its bonds.?

But the recovery remains weak by historical standards. Four years after a recession, pent-up demand typically produces a strong rebound in growth and a?sustained hiring spree by employers. So far, that hasn?t happened.?

Most forecasters expect the slow steady pace of expansion to continue through this year and into 2014, with the unemployment rate gradually falling.?

The consensus sees GDP picking up to a 2.7 percent annual rate by the end of this year and 3.0 percent by the end of 2014, according to the latest survey by Blue Chip Economic Indicators. That pace is expected to pull the unemployment rate down to 7.5 percent by the end of this year and to 7.0 percent by the end of next year.

If that scenario plays out, it will be awhile before the Fed reaches its 6.5 percent jobless rate target and begins to throttle back its money-making machinery. ? ? ? ??

?At some point were going to have to wean ourselves off that kind of support,? said Fratto. ?And I think we?re going to see that this year. But we have to go through that ? and it?s going to bode well for the future.?

(AP) ? Kevin Tsujihara was named the next chief executive of the Warner Bros. studio, one of the oldest and the largest producers of TV shows and movies in Hollywood. He'll take over from Barry Meyer on March 1.

Tsujihara, 48, has been president of the studio's home entertainment division since 2005. He said one of his key priorities will be maintaining continuity at the studio, which traces back its corporate roots to 1923 and the founding brothers, Albert, Sam, Harry and Jack.

"We've had four management teams in 90 years," Tsujihara said in an interview. "From my perspective, the thing we absolutely have to safeguard is the culture here at Warner Bros."

That culture includes nurturing artists and doing things first, he said. In 1927, Warner Bros. released the first "talkie," ''The Jazz Singer." It has taken a lead role in introducing the DVD and later high-definition Blu-ray discs. In late 2011, it was the first studio to launch home movies in "UltraViolet," a system that gives consumers online access to their disc libraries.

"We've been very aggressive on new business models and new technologies. That's something I would continue to expect going forward," he said.

Jeff Bewkes, the chief executive of Warner Bros. parent Time Warner Inc., said in a statement Monday that Tsujihara was the right leader for the studio, combining strategic thinking with financial discipline.

"Kevin is one of the most effective and respected executives within Time Warner," Bewkes said.

Meyer will continue on as chairman of the studio through 2013.

The appointment ends a three-way race to succeed Meyer, 69, who has been chairman and CEO of the studio since 1999.

After Alan Horn left as president of Warner Bros. in April 2011, an office of the president was shared between Tsujihara, Warner Bros. Pictures President Jeff Robinov, and Warner Bros. Television President Bruce Rosenblum. It was assumed one of the three would succeed Meyer.

Rosenblum said in a statement he was disappointed: "Who wouldn't be? Warner Bros. is a unique and special place and I know it will be in good hands with Kevin at the helm."

Robinov also offered his congratulations in a statement: "We are both good friends and colleagues and I think he's an excellent choice for the job."

Tsujihara is the first Japanese American head of the studio. He briefly addressed his ethnic background, saying "Obviously, I'm proud of my heritage. I don't think that that played a role."

He graduated from Stanford and founded the Web-based tax filing company QuickTax Inc. He joined Warner Bros. in 1994, at first to manage the company's interest in theme-park operator Six Flags. He later took executive roles overseeing its new media endeavors and corporate strategy.

Since divesting its AOL and cable TV operations, Time Warner has narrowed its focus on content in recent years, making the studio a more important factor in the company's finances.

In fiscal 2011, the studio accounted for $12.6 billion in revenue, about 43 percent of the entire company's revenue, and $1.3 billion in operating profit, about 22 percent of the total.

Time Warner shares fell 31 cents to close at $50.09 on Monday in a mixed overall market. Time Warner shares have traded in a 52-week range of $33.62 to $51.29.

STOCKS NEWS SINGAPORE-Index little changed, Noble falls

Singapore shares were little changed by midday as weakness

in commodity stocks such as Noble Group was offset by

small gains in market heavyweight Singapore Telecommunications

.

The market lacked inspiration from Wall Street, where the

S&P 500 index eased slightly after an eight-day run of gains.

The Straits Times Index was down 0.11 percent at

3,271.27 points. The MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside

Japan was up 0.7 percent.

Noble fell 2.8 percent to S$1.215, while SingTel gained 0.87

percent to S$3.48. Noble was suspended from Argentina's grains

register for an investigation into unpaid taxes, according to a

media report.

"The fall is a knee-jerk reaction to the suspension but it

is unlikely to be material," said a trader.

"The index seems to be stuck in the range of 3250-3280,"

said OCBC investment analyst Carey Wong, adding that the market

is awaiting results from property firms for direction.

Property firms have been in play recently after the

Singapore government introduced new measures to cool the

residential property market.

The move triggered selling in most property stocks, but the

larger ones such as CapitaLand have rebounded.

US economy gets lift from housing, other tailwinds

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. economy is a study in contrasts.

The housing, banking and auto industries are surging back to health and that has helped push the stock market to a five-year peak. Higher prices for homes and stocks tend to make people feel wealthier and spend more.

Yet unemployment remains high and hiring modest. The end of a Social Security tax cut is shrinking already flat pay. Federal budget fights have put businesses and consumers on edge.

Balanced between those tailwinds and headwinds, the economy is struggling to accelerate. By the end of this year, though, many analysts think the tailwinds will succeed in boosting growth and fueling a more robust economy in 2014.

The struggling department store chain this week will begin adding back some of the hundreds of sales it ditched last year in hopes of luring shoppers who were turned off when the discounts disappeared, CEO Ron Johnson told The Associated Press.

Penney also plans to add price tags or signs for more than half of its merchandise to show customers how much they're saving by shopping at the chain ? a strategy used by a few other retailers. For store branded items such as Arizona, Penney will show comparison prices from competitors.

The moves are a reversal for Penney on the eve of the one-year anniversary when it vowed to almost completely get rid of the sales that Americans covet but that cut into a store's profits. The idea was to offer everyday low prices that customers could count on rather than the nearly 600 fleeting discounts, coupons and sales it once offered.

Toyota sold nearly 9.75 million vehicles last year

TOKYO (AP) -- Now it's official: Toyota is once again the world's top automaker.

Toyota Motor Corp. released its tally for global vehicle sales for last year Monday at a record 9.748 million vehicles ? a bigger number than the estimate it gave last month of about 9.7 million vehicles.

It was already clear Toyota had dethroned General Motors Co. as the Detroit-based automaker fell short, selling 9.29 million vehicles.

GM had been the top-selling automaker for more than seven decades before losing the title to Toyota in 2008.

Crucial, long-overdue BlackBerry makeover arrives

TORONTO (AP) -- The maker of the BlackBerry smartphone is promising a speedier device, a superb typing experience and the ability to keep work and personal identities separate on the same phone. It's the fruit of a crucial, long-overdue makeover for the Canadian company.

Thorsten Heins, chief executive of Research In Motion Ltd., will show off the first phone with the new BlackBerry 10 system in New York on Wednesday. A marketing campaign that includes a Super Bowl ad will accompany the long-anticipated debut. Repeated delays have left the once-pioneering BlackBerry an afterthought in the shadow of Apple's trend-setting iPhone and Google's Android-driven devices.

Now, there's some optimism. Previews of the software have gotten favorable reviews on blogs. Financial analysts are starting to see some slight room for a comeback. RIM's stock has nearly tripled to $16.18 from a nine-year low in September, though it's still nearly 90 percent below its 2008 peak of $147.

US durable goods orders rise 4.6 percent on aircraft

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. demand for long-lasting manufactured goods rose sharply in December on strong gains in volatile aircraft orders. But companies slowed their orders of goods that signal investment plans, indicating manufacturing could stay choppy in 2013.

The Commerce Department said Monday that overall orders for durable goods increased 4.6 percent in December compared with November. The gains were led by a 56.4 percent increase in military aircraft orders and a 10.1 percent increase in commercial aircraft orders.

Orders rose in other major categories, including machinery, communications equipment and primary metals.

Tight inventory slows US pending home sales

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A measure of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes fell last month after reaching a 2 ?-year high in November. Sales were held back by a limited supply of available homes.

The National Association of Realtors said Monday that its seasonally adjusted index for pending home sales dropped 4.3 percent in December from November to 101.7. That's still 6.9 percent higher than a year ago.

The decline signals that sales of previously occupied homes may cool off in the coming months. There's generally a one- to two-month lag between a signed contract and a completed sale.

Yahoo's 4Q report shows more signs of progress

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Yahoo showed more signs of progress during the fourth quarter as the Internet company took advantage of higher ad prices and rising earnings from its international investments to deliver numbers that exceeded analyst forecasts.

The results announced Monday covered Yahoo's first full quarter under CEO Marissa Mayer. Yahoo Inc. lured Mayer away from Google Inc. in mid-July in its latest attempt to snap out of a funk that had depressed its revenue and stock price.

The company fared well enough in the final three months of last year to produce its first full-year gain in revenue since 2008.

Caterpillar sees uncertain 2013 after tough 4Q

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Caterpillar said on Monday that its 2013 profit could shrink if the world's economy doesn't pick up in the second half of the year, as mining companies and builders remain cautious about buying new gear.

The cloudy outlook for the year came as Caterpillar reported a fourth-quarter profit less than half as big as a year ago because of a deal in China that went bad and slower growth around most of the world.

Caterpillar Inc. is the largest maker of construction and mining equipment, so its performance rises and falls with the world's economy. It tries to predict where the economy is headed so it knows how many excavators, bulldozers and mining trucks to build.

Boeing 787 probe shifts to monitoring system maker

TOKYO (AP) -- The joint U.S. and Japanese investigation into the Boeing 787's battery problems has shifted from the battery-maker to the manufacturer of a monitoring system.

Japan transport ministry official Shigeru Takano said Monday the probe into battery-maker GS Yuasa was over for now as no evidence was found it was the source of the problems.

Ministry officials said they will inspect Kanto Aircraft Instrument Co. on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation. It makes a system that monitors voltage, charging and temperature of the lithium-ion batteries.

PFT: Adrian Peterson says he is NFL MVP

Kyle Rudolph PicGetty Images

After the NFC jumped out in front 10-7 in the Pro Bowl?s initial 16 minutes, Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson briefly returned the lead to the AFC by reading Giants quarterback Eli Manning?s eyes in zone coverage and picking off Eli?s pass, which was intended for Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph.

Johnson beat everyone to the house for a 42-yard pick six, putting the AFC up 14-10 early in the second quarter.

The NFC rallied back on its next drive, keyed by a BeastMode run out of Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch. Lynch shed five tackles for a vicious 12-yard gain, easily the best run of a Pro Bowl that has so far been decidedly pass happy.

Two snaps after Lynch?s run, Eli hit Giants teammate Victor Cruz for a nine-yard touchdown on an in route out of the slot, giving the NFC the lead back at 17-14. Cruz, as he is known to do, performed a quick salsa dance in the end zone to celebrate.

Trailing by three points midway through the second quarter, the AFC replaced Peyton Manning at quarterback with Matt Schaub of the Texans. On a 40-yard bomb attempt intended for Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas, Schaub was intercepted by Falcons safety William Moore. Moore returned the pick 27 yards to the NFC 28.

Eli got aggressive with under three minutes remaining in the first half. He noticed Rudolph in Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali?s coverage down the right sideline, waved Rudolph to continue his route downfield, and hit him for a deep gain of 52 behind a lumbering Hali.

The first flag of the game was called on Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey toward the end of the second quarter. When explaining the penalty, official Ed Hochuli made sure to announce that ?Yes, there are penalties in the Pro Bowl.? (Yes, Hochuli really said that.)

Bailey was covering Bucs receiver Vincent Jackson in the end zone when whistled, so the ball was placed at the AFC?s one-yard line.

Lynch punched it in from a yard out, increasing the NFC?s lead to 24-14. Eli led yet another touchdown drive to close out the half, going 75 yards in the final 68 seconds with a three-yard scoring strike to Rudolph to cap it off.

As of halftime, top performers in the 2013 Pro Bowl so far have included Rudolph (five catches, game-high 122 yards, one touchdown), Jackson (five catches, 86 yards, one touchdown) and Cruz (game-high eight catches, 66 yards, touchdown).

Through two quarters, Rudolph is the favorite for Pro Bowl MVP.

Why Don't Experts Share The Personal Injury Legal Advice In This ...

Posted by Joyce Loto on Jan 26, 2013 in Education |

Have you filed or are you thinking about filing a personal injury case? What are some of the things that will likely come your way over the course of your case? Although you cannot see into the future, it will nonetheless benefit you to examine things that are typical in personal injury cases so you will know what to expect.

If you are unhappy with your personal injury lawyer, know that you can terminate the contract. This must be done in writing, but it gives you an out and allows you to find someone else to represent you. Just keep in mind that if you choose to do this, you will still owe your attorney funds for the work he has completed prior to being let go.

Personal injury lawyers tend to specialize in a number of different fields. For example, one may solely take on medical malpractice cases, whereas another may be proficient in automotive accidents. Don?t assume that all personal injury lawyers are the same and be sure to make inquiries about any lawyer you have under consideration.

Make sure to have contact information for a backup in case your attorney cannot be reached. This might be another attorney in the office, a paralegal or some other assistant. Having someone to contact in an emergency is important, especially when you are considering a case that could make the difference in your health and financial future.

If you do not get medical attention as soon as you are injured, you may find that you get less in damages at a personal injury trial. You have to be able to ?mitigate losses? by getting yourself repaired as quickly as possible, allowing you to get out of bed and back to work.

At your first meeting with your personal injury lawyer, bring anything that you think is relevant to your case. For example, if the police were involved, bring a copy of their report. If you have spoken with your insurance company, bring any notes that detail what happened with them. All of this information will help your attorney start piecing together your case.

If you are paying your lawyer an hourly rate, remember that any communication is billed. To help keep costs down, gather all information that you want to discuss before visiting or calling the attorney. Remember, every time you call, the attorney must find your file and then talk with you which can result in you spending more money.

Be sure you get yourself an actual personal injury lawyer. Understand that lawyers specialize in many different areas. Not all of them specialize in personal injury. A personal injury lawyer is very knowledgeable on these matters; therefore, you will be more likely to win your case and receive a larger settlement than you thought possible.

As the start of this piece mentioned, the law may be furthest thing from your mind when you suffer a personal injury. You do need to focus on it though, seeing as it will be a major part of your life in the weeks, months, and perhaps years to come. Visit www.clearlawonline.co.uk for more information.

Finally, Marissa Mayer Explains What Her Yahoo ... - Business Insider

The question that has plagued every Yahoo CEO for the last 10 years or so is a pretty simple one: What does Yahoo do?

Marissa Mayer, six months on the job now, seems to have come up with a pretty good answer.?

She debuted it this morning in a keynote interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

She said that the Web has become "vast" with content, and that what Yahoo can do is use all the contextual clues it has about its users ? their "social context," their specific location, their activity on Yahoo and elsewhere ? "to make sense of the content."

In short, what Marissa Mayer's Yahoo will do is present "The Internet, ordered for you."

"We provide a feed of information that is ordered ? a web, ordered for you, [that] is also available on your mobile phone."

"Which is interesting," she said, "because it brings Yahoo back to its roots."

That's the kind of vision that will excite Yahoo shareholders, employees, users and clients.?

Unfortunately, Mayer says it's not going to happen right away.

Personalization that fully takes advantage of "personalized notions" ? "things like likes on Facebook, tweets, articles you click on" ? "will probably happen in the next three to five years," Mayer told the audience.

You can watch Mayer talk about this specific idea, here.

Polar bear occupies Davos Shell over Arctic drilling

DAVOS, Switzerland - Activists with a big fake polar bear have occupied a Shell service station in the Swiss resort of Davos to protest Royal Dutch Shell PLC's oil drilling in the Arctic.

About 25 activists from around Europe chained gas pumps together Friday at the station near where the World Economic Forum was being held and hung a banner on the roof reading "Arctic Oil - Too Risky."

Greenpeace helped stage the protest, raising concerns about dangers to the environment from Shell's drilling in Alaska and urging forum organizers to reconsider Shell's participation. A Shell drill barge ran aground on a remote Alaska island on New Year's Eve.

Shell officials, among the 2,500 corporate and political leaders in Davos this week, did not immediately respond to phone calls about the protest.

Syrian forces escalate offensive in Homs

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's army unleashed a barrage of rocket and artillery fire on rebel-held areas in a central province Friday as part of a widening offensive against fighters seeking to oust President Bashar Assad. At least 80 people were killed in fighting nationwide, according to activist groups.

The United Nations said a record number of Syrians streamed into Jordan this month, doubling the population of the kingdom's already-cramped refugee camp to 65,000. Over 30,000 people arrived in Zaatari in January ? 6,000 in the past two days alone, the U.N. said.

The newcomers are mostly families, women, children and elderly who fled from southern Syria, said Melissa Fleming, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She said the UNHCR was working with the Jordanian government to open a second major camp nearby by the end of this month.

Many of the new arrivals at Zaatari are from the southern town of Daraa, where the uprising against Assad first erupted nearly two years ago, the Britain-based Save the Children said Friday.

Five buses, crammed with "frightened and exhausted people who fled with what little they could carry," pull up every hour at the camp, said Saba al-Mobasat, an aid worker with Save the Children.

The exodus reflected the latest spike in violence in Syria's civil war. The conflict began in March 2011 after a peaceful uprising against Assad, inspired by the Arab Spring wave of revolutions that toppled leaders in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen, turned violent.

Activists said the army recently brought in military reinforcements to the central province of Homs and launched a renewed offensive aimed at retaking patches of territory that have been held by rebels for months.

An amateur video posted online by activists showed rockets slamming into buildings in the rebel-held town of Rastan, just north of the provincial capital, Homs. Heavy gunfire could be heard in the background.

Another video showed thick black and gray smoke rising from a building in the besieged city. "The city of Homs is burning ... day and night, the shelling of Homs doesn't stop," the narrator is heard saying.

Troops also battled rebels around Damascus in an effort to dislodge opposition fighters who have set up enclaves in surrounding towns and villages. The troops fired artillery shells Friday at several districts, including Zabadani and Daraya, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, said regime warplanes carried out airstrikes on the suburb of Douma, the largest patch of rebel-held ground near Damascus.

The Observatory, which like the LCC relies on a network of activists around Syria, said at least 80 people were killed in violence across the country Friday, including 11 in Homs.

Other video showed devastation in the Damascus neighborhood of Arbeen, following what activists said were two airstrikes there. A bleeding, wounded man can be seen being helped out of the rubble of the destroyed building. The videos appeared consistent with Associated Press reporting on the fighting.

Last month, the UNHCR said it needed $1 billion to aid Syrians in the Mideast, and that half of that money was required to help refugees in Jordan.

The agency says 597,240 refugees have registered or are awaiting registration with the UNHCR in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. Some countries have higher estimates, noting many Syrians have found accommodations without registering, relying on their own resources and savings.

In a rare gesture, Syria's Interior Ministry called on those who fled the country during the civil war to return, including regime opponents. It said the government will help hundreds of thousands of citizens return whether they left "legally or illegally."

Syrian opposition figures abroad who want to take part in reconciliation talks will also be allowed back, according to a ministry statement carried late Thursday by the state SANA news agency.

If they "have the desire to participate in the national dialogue, they would be allowed to enter Syria," it said.

The proposed talks are part of Assad's initiative to end the conflict that started as peaceful protests in March 2011 but turned into a civil war. Tens of thousands of activists, their family members and opposition supporters remain jailed by the regime, according to international activist groups.

Opposition leaders repeatedly have rejected any talks that include Assad, insisting he must step down. The international community backs that demand, but Assad has clung to power, vowing to crush the armed opposition.

More than 60,000 people have been killed since the conflict began, according to the U.N.

Activists also said two cars packed with explosives blew up near a military intelligence building in the Syrian-controlled part of the Golan Heights, killing eight. Most of the dead were members of the Syrian military, the Observatory said.

The Syrian government had no comment on the attacks, which occurred Thursday night in the town of Quneitra, and nobody claimed responsibility for them.

Car bombs and suicide attacks targeting Syrian troops and government institutions have been the hallmark of Islamic militants fighting in Syria alongside rebels trying to topple Assad.

Quneitra is on the cease-fire line between Syria and Israel, which controls most of the Golan Heights after capturing the strategic territory from Syria in the 1967 war.

YaleNews | Genetic landscape of common brain tumors holds key to ...

Nearly the entire genetic landscape of the most common form of brain tumor can be explained by abnormalities in just five genes, an international team of researchers led by Yale School of Medicine scientists report online in the Jan. 24 edition of the journal Science.? Knowledge of the genomic profile of the tumors and their location in the brain make it possible for the first time to develop personalized medical therapies for meningiomas, which currently are only managed surgically.

Meningioma tumors affect about 170,000 patients in the United States. They are usually benign but can turn malignant in about 10 percent of cases. Even non-cancerous tumors can require surgery if they affect the surrounding brain tissue and disrupt neurological functions.?

Approximately half of the tumors have already been linked to a mutation or deletion of a gene called neurofibromin 2, or NF2. The origins of the rest of the meningiomas had remained a mystery.

The Yale team conducted genomic analyses of 300 meningiomas and found four new genetic suspects, each of which yields clues to the origins and treatment of the condition. Tumors mutated with each of these genes tend to be located in different areas of the brain, which can indicate how likely they are to become malignant.

?Combining knowledge of these mutations with the location of tumor growth has direct clinical relevance and opens the door for personalized therapies,? said Dr. Murat Gunel, the Nixdorff-German Professor of Neurosurgery, professor of genetics and of neurobiology, and senior author of the study. Gunel is also a member of Yale Cancer Center?s Genetics and Genomics Research Program.

For instance, two of the mutations identified ? SMO and AKT1 ? have been linked to various cancers. SMO mutations had previously been found in basal cell carcinoma and are the target of an already approved drug for that form of skin cancer. Another, KLF4, activates a suite of genes and is known for its role in inducing stem cell formation, even in cells that have fully differentiated into a specific tissue type. Mutations in a TRAF7, a gene not previously associated with cancer, were found in approximately one-fourth of tumors. Meningiomas with these mutations are found in the skull base and are unlikely to become cancerous.? In contrast, NF2 mutant tumors that flank the brain?s hemispheres are more likely to progress to malignancy, especially in males.

Doctors may be able to use targeted chemotherapy on patients with non-NF2 mutations, especially those with recurrent or invasive meningiomas and those who are surgically at high risk. Individualized chemotherapies could also spare patients irradiation treatment, a risk factor for progression of these generally benign tumors. Gunel said it may also be possible to extend these approaches to more malignant tumors.

Funding for the study was provided by Gregory M. Kiez and Mehmet Kutman Foundation.

'Run to the Fire': Career Advice from Top Agency Execs | Digiday

Getting ahead in the digital media and ad world isn?t easy; it?s competitive, it?s cutthroat, and it?s demanding. With that in mind, Digiday is reaching out those at the top of the industry to see what career advice they have for those staffers lower in the ranks. This is the advice some senior agency execs gave:

Tom Bedecarre, Chairman, AKQA
One of the fastest ways to succeed in advertising is to learn your client?s business. Understand their customers? needs and preferences. Go on sales calls and factory floor visits. Become the most knowledgeable person at the agency on their products and services. Investigate competitive brands and competitive advertising. Do store checks. Read everything you can about your client?s company and their industry. That?s how a junior staffer can make themselves an invaluable member of a client team.

Cindy Gallop, founder, IfWeRanTheWorld, former president, BBH US
My response to anyone asking ??What is your advice to a young person going into advertising?? is: ?Don?t.? What I mean by that is, don?t go into advertising to ?go into advertising.? Go into advertising to make what you want to happen, happen. You bring a completely fresh, objective perspective to what our industry does (and our industry does not listen enough to the newest people in it). Decide what you want the future of advertising to be, and then make it happen ? whether that?s within the agency lucky enough to employ you or when you start your own venture within the industry that?s lucky enough to have you want to reinvent it.

John Montgomery, COO, GroupM Interaction
Always put yourself in the consumer?s shoes. Many of the brands that you work on won?t be in your purchasing repertoire. It doesn?t matter if you are a media planner, a data strategist, or a creative, ideas drive success ? especially brave, risky ones. Clients don?t hire us to deliver reports; they hire us for our point of view. Take some risks. Most companies won?t fire you if you fail, as long as you fail forward. It?s also a good idea to find a mentor in the organization that you can tap for wisdom and support, and take stock of your job every now and again. If you aren?t having fun and learning at least part of the time you should consider a change. You don?t have to be a math graduate to work in digital, but you do need to make a big effort to understand data to succeed in the new environment. Learn the value of data for the insights that it can bring ? the interpretation is every bit as important as the math. Keep on asking, ?So what does this data teach me??

Andrew Essex, CEO, Droga5
This industry can sometimes envelope people in a bubble. Ensure you?re informed outside of your daily frame of reference. Always stay aware of what?s happening in adjacent industries, and embrace curiosity.

Andreas Combuechen, CEO, Atmosphere Proximity
Always run towards the fire and help out. Don?t be afraid to fail spectacularly, and develop the ability to pick yourself up quickly when you do.

Rob Norman, chief digital officer, GroupM
Based on my experience, I would have four pieces of advice for those just starting out in this business today, and the first is to learn statistics. The second is to read: Read books about anything other than business guru bullshit and ?50 Shades of Grey.? Third, look at every task you do with the aim of making it 10 percent quicker and 10 percent more valuable. And fourth, ensure you talk to the consumers of every brand you work on. You should understand how they live and choose; context is everything.
