A bridal event Friday at the Saxon Club in Austintown featured gowns and food, but the main focus was on fighting breast cancer.
"I will walk for as long as I can until they find a cure," said Janet Bartell.
Bartell's son, Josh Bartell, hosted the bridal event to help his mother and sister raise money to participate in the upcoming Susan G. Komen 3-Day event. Josh owns Bartell's Cupcakery in Youngstown.
"It's very close to my heart. My mom's done the walk now for five years. We have 11 women in my immediate family alone and statistically speaking 1 in 8 will be affected by breast cancer," Josh Bartell said. "So the odds in my family are very good, and we want to eliminate that."
The 60 mile walk happens this fall. Janet Bartell and her daughter are walking in the Washington, D.C. event.
"I'm walking with people who are in stage four breast cancer (and) having chemo, and they're out there walking," said Janet Bartell. "We're doing 22 miles the first day, 22 miles the second and the last day we do 16."
Money from vendors, an auction and raffle will help the Bartell family close in on their $5,000 goal. A Facebook advertisement caught Jennifer Vigorito's attention. She's a consultant for Scentsy Wickless Candles.
"I just thought it was absolutely a great cause to support women," Vigorito said. "I'm a big supporter of things like breast cancer research and just supporting women in general."
Janet Bartell lives for the day when there's finally a cure for the devastating disease.
"I've been blessed with healthy kids, grandkids and it's something I have to do," Janet Bartell said.
