Amid the new tower blocks that are changing this city?s skyline rises a newly restored symbol of Beirut?s multireligious society.

The Magen Abraham synagogue is the last Jewish place of worship to survive in Beirut, a lone reminder that a few decades ago a thriving Jewish community lived in the city center.

The Jewish faith is one of the 18 officially recognized sects that exist in Lebanon. When the synagogue was built in 1920 there were some 12,000 Jews in Lebanon. But the Arab-Israeli conflict and Lebanon?s devastating 1975-90 civil war spurred Jews to emigrate, and today there are only around 150 left here.

The last rabbi departed in 1975, and the synagogue fell into disrepair. Much of the structural damage was inflicted, ironically, by shelling from Israeli gunboats in 1982.

Restoration began two years ago and was funded by donations from Lebanese Jews both in Lebanon and overseas. The interior has been restored to its original d?cor with sky-blue walls, arched windows, and whitewashed columns with small brown painted streaks that mimic the fossilized shells in the original limestone columns. Work is expected to be completed by summer, and the first rabbi in nearly four decades is expected to arrive soon.

?Once the rabbi is here, we will be able to hold weddings again,? says a Jewish Council member in Lebanon who oversaw the restoration. He declines to allow his name to be quoted, illustrating that Lebanese Jews still prefer to maintain a low profile.

Brazil: Critics slam court's underage sex verdict

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) ? A Brazilian court decision that sex with a 12-year-old does not necessarily constitute statutory rape has caused outrage among human rights activists in the country.

The Superior Court of Justice ruled this week that a man accused of having sex with three 12-year-olds couldn't be convicted of rape because of extenuating circumstances, including the fact the girls had previously worked as prostitutes.

Amnesty International on Friday blasted the verdict by the appeals court as "outrageous" and called it an "affront to the most basic human rights.

"This shocking ruling effectively gives a green light to rapists and if it prevails could dissuade other survivors of sexual abuse from reporting these crimes," the head of the group's Brazil branch, Atila Roque, said in a statement.

Brazil's human rights minister, Maria do Rosario Nunes, said the verdict "would in practice spell impunity," and she pledged to try to get it overturned.

The court's president, Ari Pargendler, has said the court is open to revising the decision

Brazilian law forbids sex with anyone under the age of 14, but that law was adopted in 2009. The court said the fact that the alleged crime occurred in 2002 was another extenuating circumstance and upheld the rulings of lower courts in Sao Paulo.

"It is of extreme concern that the protections provided by Brazil's legislation in cases such as these have not been implemented," said the Amnesty International statement.

How quantum physics could make 'The Matrix' more efficient

Researchers have discovered a new way in which computers based on quantum physics could beat the performance of classical computers. The work, by researchers based in Singapore and the UK, implies that a Matrix-like simulation of reality would require less memory on a quantum computer than on a classical computer. It also hints at a way to investigate whether a deeper theory lies beneath quantum theory. The finding is published 27 March in Nature Communications.

The finding emerges from fundamental consideration of how much information is needed to predict the future. Mile Gu, Elisabeth Rieper and Vlatko Vedral at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National Univesity of Singapore, with Karoline Wiesner from the University of Bristol, UK, considered the simulation of "stochastic" processes, where there are several possible outcomes to a given procedure, each occurring with a calculable probability. Many phenomena, from stock market movements to the diffusion of gases, can be modelled as stochastic processes.

The details of how to simulate such processes have long occupied researchers. The minimum amount of information required to simulate a given stochastic process is a significant topic of study in the field of complexity theory, where it is known in scientific literature as statistical complexity.

Researchers know how to calculate the amount of information transferred inherently in any stochastic process. Theoretically, this sets the lowest amount of information needed to simulate the process. In reality, however, classical simulations of stochastic processes require more storage than this.

Gu, Wiesner, Rieper and Vedral, who is also affiliated with the University of Oxford, UK, showed that quantum simulators need to store less information than the optimal classical simulators. That is because quantum simulations can encode information about the probabilities in a "superposition", where one quantum bit of information can represent more than one classical bit.

What surprised the researchers is that the quantum simulations are still not as efficient as they could be: they still have to store more information than the process would seem to need.

That suggests quantum theory might not yet be optimized. "What's fascinating to us is that there is still a gap. It makes you think, maybe here's a way of thinking about a theory beyond quantum physics," says Vedral.

Ya' know, there's nothing like a little rocket engine hunting to save oneself from the doldrums of generating billions of dollars in revenue in the private sector. At least that appears to be the case for Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, who spearheaded an ocean expedition to find the F-1 engines used in the Apollo 11 mission. Forget newer stuff like the GENIE, Vega and ~~Slytherin's~~ SuperDraco -- the classic F-1 is still the rocket engine that ignites Bezos' proverbial liquid fuel. Having found his prize resting 14,000 feet below the surface via deep sea sonar, Bezos' team is now trying to recover at least one of the engines. Bezos says NASA still retains ownership of the F-1s but he's hoping the agency will allow one of them to be displayed at the Museum of Flight in Amazon's home turf of Seattle if both are successfully retrieved. No word on whether the rocket engines will be delivered via Super Saver Shipping.

As you move through different life stages, chances are that your estate planning needs will evolve as well.? As your life goals and familial circumstances change, they will need to be incorporated into your estate plan. Estate planning is not a one time endeavor. ?The following guide will help you understand when you need an estate plan, and when it?s time to review your existing plan with an estate planning attorney.

Young/single

? A durable power of attorney, health care proxy, HIPAA release and living will enable you to designate who will make decisions for you if you become incapacitated

? Create a will to control who will inherit your assets, and consider a trust for minor beneficiaries

Engaged

? Consider whether a prenuptial agreement is appropriate. Factors may include children from prior relationships, disparity in net worth and expected future inheritances

Married

? Update your durable power of attorney, health care proxy and HIPAA release to name your spouse

? Create a revocable living trust for marital estate tax planning and update beneficiary designations if you want to name your spouse as beneficiary of your 401(k)/retirement plans, life insurance policies and pension

? Look into life insurance to ensure each other?s financial security

Parents

? Update your will to nominate a guardian/conservator for your minor children

? Create a revocable trust, or amend your existing trust, to ensure your children?s inheritance is properly managed

? Establish an emergency guardianship proxy that nominates a guardian to care for your child if both parents are incapacitated

? Consider reducing the size of your estate through gifting or creating an irrevocable life insurance trust or charitable trust

Engineers set their sights on asteroid deflection

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? Pioneering engineers at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow are developing an innovative technique based on lasers that could radically change asteroid deflection technology.

The research has unearthed the possibility of using a swarm of relatively small satellites flying in formation and cooperatively firing solar-powered lasers onto an asteroid -- this would overcome the difficulties associated with current methods that are focused on large unwieldy spacecraft.

Dr Massimiliano Vasile, of Strathclyde's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, is leading the research. He said: "The approach we are developing would involve sending small satellites, capable of flying in formation with the asteroid and firing their lasers targeting the asteroid at close range.

"The use of high power lasers in space for civil and commercial applications is in its infancy and one of the main challenges is to have high power, high efficiency and high beam quality all at the same time.

"The additional problem with asteroid deflection is that when the laser begins to break down the surface of the object, the plume of gas and debris impinges the spacecraft and contaminates the laser. However, our laboratory tests have proven that the level of contamination is less than expected and the laser could continue to function for longer than anticipated."

Just over 100 years ago a 2000-kilometer area of vegetation was destroyed when an object believed to be 30-50 metres in diameter exploded in the skies above Tunguska, Siberia. While the likelihood of an immediate threat from a similar asteroid strike remains low, it is widely recognised that researching preventative measures is of significant importance.

Dr Vasile added: "The Tunguska class of events are expected to occur within a period of a few centuries. Smaller asteroids collide with Earth more frequently and generally burn in the atmosphere although some of them reach the ground or explode at low altitude potentially causing damage to buildings and people.

"We could reduce the threat posed by the potential collision with small to medium size objects using a flotilla of small agile spacecraft each equipped with a highly efficient laser which is much more feasible than a single large spacecraft carrying a multi mega watt. Our system is scalable, a larger asteroid would require adding one or more spacecraft to the flotilla, and intrinsically redundant -- if one spacecraft fails the others can continue."

Dr Vasile is now investigating the use of the same concept to remove space debris. The number of objects in orbit classified as debris is ever-increasing and with no widely accepted solution for their removal. Researchers at the University of Strathclyde believe the space-borne lasers could be used to lower the original orbit of the space debris and reduce the congestion.

Dr Vasile said: "The amount of debris in orbit is such that we might experience a so called Kessler syndrome -- this is when the density becomes so high that collisions between objects could cause an exponentially increasing cascade of other collisions.

"While there is significant monitoring in place to keep track of these objects, there is no specific system in place to remove them and our research could be a possible solution.

"A major advantage of using our technique is that the laser does not have to be fired from the ground. Obviously there are severe restrictions with that process as it has to travel through the atmosphere, has a constrained range of action and can hit the debris only for short arcs."

The research was carried out in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde's Institute of Photonics and was presented to the Planetary Society at the end of February. ?
