(AP) ? Up to a foot of snow fell in parts of southern New England with the latest winter storm to move through the Northeast, national weather forecasters said Sunday.

The storm began Saturday afternoon and ended by Sunday morning, with some power outages but no reports of critical injuries or major property damage. Dry weather was expected for days in southern New England, although strong winds may chill the bones.

Meteorologist Frank Nocera of the National Weather Service in Taunton, Mass., said southern New England appeared to be the hardest hit.

Six to 12 inches of snow fell in Rhode Island, eastern Connecticut and eastern Massachusetts, including Foxborough where the New England Patriots play. The exception was at Boston and the Cape Cod area where rain was mixed with snow. There two to four inches fell. Many residents lost power after wet snow piled up on power lines.

The storm spread over the Northeast and parts of Ohio on Saturday, just days after the regions were hit by another storm that moved in from the nation's midsection.

New York City and Philadelphia saw a mix of rain and snow, and drivers throughout the regions were warned to be cautious. About 20 vehicles piled up in a storm-related chain-reaction crash on Interstate 93 in New Hampton, N.H., police said, and five people were injured.

Officials lowered the speed limit on much of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, about 300 miles from the Ohio state line to east-central Pennsylvania, from 65 mph to 45 mph. Flights at Philadelphia's airport, mostly arrivals, were delayed about an hour, spokeswoman Stacy Jackson said.

In Albany, N.Y., a regional jet skidded into a snow bank at the airport and became stuck, temporarily stranding passengers en route to Chicago. The 66 passengers and four crew members aboard the GoJet Airlines flight, operating as United Express, were put on a bus and sent back to the airport. There were no injuries, and the incident didn't cause any other flight delays, airport authority spokesman Doug Myers said.

In Ohio, Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati saw about 2 to 5 inches of snow by Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

Facebook Recovers Losses from False Instagram Story

Facebook Recovers Losses from False Instagram Story

It took a few days to sort through the rumors running rampant on the Internet concerning the mass exodus from Instagram, but it looks like the truth has finally caught up and overtaken the false allegations. In doing so, Facebook?s stock recovered from a previous 2.9% drop and closed out the week almost unchanged. Rumors or misinterpreted information can have devastating effects on the bottom line and in this case could have cost Facebook stockholders $1.5 Billion dollars.

(Mark)Twain had it right when he said that the truth can?t even find its pants before a lie has been around the world. This morning we saw some of that.

Northland, with the help of the Cedar Creek Lake community, collected more than $1,200 worth of toys to donate to local children?s charities for Christmas.
The toys were delivered to the Family Resource Center and the Christian Life Center Dec. 18.
Northland customers received free installation on their services by donating a $20 toy.
The Northland employees were moved by the generosity of their customers and the community. Toys ranged from play kitchens and Hot Wheel tracks, to Baby Alive Dolls.
Some customers went above and beyond the $20 minimum, bringing multiple toys or higher-priced items.
?Our local Northland employees, including myself, are overjoyed with the response to the toy drive,? Northland marketing coordinator Kelsey Teel said.
?The quality of toys we collected was outstanding, and we were so happy to pass them on to great organizations like the Family Resource Center and Christian Life Center, where they will be given to children who truly need them. We sincerely thank the community for their participation in giving this Holiday season,? Teel added.

PlayStation 2 reaches retirement age, is discontinued in Japan

PlayStation 2 reaches retirement age, is discontinued in Japan

Sony's PlayStation 3 has been on the market so long you'd think that production of the relatively ancient PS2 stopped some time ago. Well, that wasn't true until now, as according to the Japanese PlayStation website, the PS2 has officially been discontinued in the region. Japanese site Famitsu adds that shipments of the console have ended, so once the remaining stock has been depleted in Japan, there'll be no replenishment. It's a sad thought, but let's remember the good times -- the PS2's various iterations have been entertaining gamers for 12 years, and with over 150 million units purchased worldwide it's become the best selling console in history. We're not sure if the PS2 is still shipping to other regions, but its retirement in Japan is probably the beginning of the end globally, so we'd recommend you pick one up now if you intend to explore that extensive back catalogue one day. The PS2 era may be drawing to a close, but its legacy will live on and it can now rub controllers with the other greats in console heaven -- we still miss you, Dreamcast.

REWIND: International Business News #50

-???????? NRA to Lobby Against Firearms Treaty: The United States? most powerful pro-gun group, the National Rifle Association (?NRA?) is vowing to contest a newly proposed international treaty aimed at regulating the $70B per year international firearms trade. While arms control has become a frontpage issue in the United States in the wake of the horrific shooting in Newtown, CT, it appears that the treaty would have little chance of success in the Senate, where pro-gun Senators have vowed to block the treaty.

-???????? World Watches as US Nears Fiscal Cliff: US taxpayers are in for a nasty surprise on January 1st unless the federal government can reach a deal to avoid a massive set of tax increases and defense spending cuts. As both sides start to divvy up blame, a deal appears increasingly less likely. US and world financial markets have become more jittery and dropped in recent days as the world braces for the impact a failed deal would have.

-???????? Germany Creates National Gun Registry: The German federal government now has a list of every legal gun owner in the country. Compiling information from many local and state registries, has painted a clearer picture of gun ownership within the country. There are roughly 5.5M legally registered guns in the country, along with roughly 1.4M gun owners ? approximately 4 guns per owner.? All EU countries are required to create such a registry by 2015.

-???????? Bermuda to Become Hub of Fixed Annuity Reinsurance?: At least one high-level fixed-income manager thinks so. However,? According to a report published in Bermuda?s Royal Gazette, Cliff Corso, CEO and chief investment officer of Cutwater Asset Management, predicts that the tiny island nation could play a big role in the fixed annuity reinsurance market. He noted:

?I think there?s a huge demand for reinsurance for fixed annuity life contracts?one of the greatest benefits, in terms of supply to Bermuda, is that, given the rate curve and where it sits today, and given the capital requirements of the insurers, there?s still a significant potential supply of reinsurance in fixed annuity life into Bermuda. There are already some players, but I think there will probably be more entrants coming to the Island to handle the potential demand for reinsurance. That?s our view, given the dynamics of the rate environment, and given the attractiveness of Bermuda as a place that is innovative and solution-oriented and that?s proven.

Bermuda has long been a center of offshore banking and insurance, but the country?s economy was hard hit by the worldwide economic crisis. Might Bermuda be poised to bounce back? Only time will tell, but a rejuvenated reinsurance market would certainly be a shot in the arm for both sectors.

The Father of the Chicken Nugget

Chicken Nuggets. We know almost everything about chicken nuggets, except who is responsible for them

Photograph by Jack Puccio/iStockphoto/Thinkstock.

We think we know the chicken nugget: small, salty, and spongy, derided by Michael Pollan and reviled by Jamie Oliver, who recreated them on camera by whizzing a chicken in a food processor and forcing it through a sieve. We know that children adore them, that parents are conflicted about them, that public-health campaigners despise them for sparking an epidemic of obesity. We know we can?t get away from them: There are nuggets at almost every fast-food chain, on almost every restaurant kids? menu, and in almost every supermarket freezer: breaded or naked; fried or grill-marked; gluten-free or organic; shaped like alphabets, dinosaurs, or stars.

We know almost everything about chicken nuggets, except who is responsible for them.

Credit, or blame, usually goes to McDonald?s, which sold its first McNuggets in 1980. But the probable inventor of the nugget is a Cornell University professor named Robert C. Baker who died in 2006, and who proposed a prototype?a frozen, breaded ?chicken stick??in 1963.

Baker was a professor of poultry science, and a chicken savant. He and his graduate students dreamed up the first versions of products we now take for granted: chicken hot dogs, chicken cold cuts, chicken meatballs, and more than 50 other edible items made from eggs and chicken but made to look like something else.

The foods they invented, which they detailed in widely distributed bulletins for anyone to copy and refine, launched what the industry now calls ?further processed? poultry. Convenient and appealing, further-processed products transformed the market for chicken, pushing consumption from 34 pounds per person in 1965 to 84 pounds last year. But pressure from that new demand transformed the industry as well, turning it from a loose confederation of many family farms into a small set of massive conglomerates with questionable labor and environmental records.

It?s a mixed legacy for a man who wanted only to increase the market power of upstate New York?s poultry farmers?men whose families have since left the business, because the changes wrought by nuggets made it unprofitable. ?I think you have to understand him as a person of his time,? Baker?s oldest son Dale, now 66, told me. ?He grew up in the Depression, not having enough food to eat. When he?d buy a dinner, he would want to get the most calories for the price. He wanted to be sure the farmers would get the best prices for their birds.?

The accepted history of the chicken nugget is told, with slight differences, in The Omnivore?s Dilemma, Fast Food Nation, and Behind the Arches, a 1986 chronicle of McDonald?s that the corporation cooperated with (and sent me, when I asked them for comment). The origin story goes like this: McDonald?s began with burgers, of course. But in 1977, the federal government?s first-ever dietary guidelines urged Americans to eat less fat, and especially less red meat. Burger sales dropped, and McDonald?s began looking for an alternative that would keep customers loyal. Its executives thought their best chance lay in chicken, the lower-fat protein that Americans were choosing instead, and the company plunged into intense product research, even hiring a European chef who had cooked for the Queen of England to contribute ideas. Test customers spurned one attempt, an experimental chicken pot-pie; the next idea, bone-in fried chicken, veered too close to the existing menu at rival KFC.

McDonald?s founder Ray Kroc ordered the chef, Rene Arend, to work on yet another product?deep-fried onion chunks, easier to mass-produce than rings?but was countermanded by the company chairman, Fred Turner. Turner still wanted something made from chicken, and he steered the chef to chicken chunks instead. Arend boned a chicken breast, cut it into small pieces, battered and fried the bits, and served them with a sauce. They were a hit within headquarters, but too labor-intensive to make on an industrial scale.

McDonald?s recruited corporate partners into a secret development campaign, calling on???? frozen-hamburger supplier Keystone Foods to mechanize chicken-chopping and fish-stick popularizer Gorton?s to perfect a coating that would cling. McNuggets debuted without advance warning in 15 Knoxville, Tenn., McDonald?s restaurants in March 1980 and blasted through the stores? sales records. Word of the new product spread so quickly among franchisees that Keystone built a processing plant in 100 days to keep up with the expected demand. When they rolled out nationwide in 1981, McNuggets became a cultural juggernaut.

What this story leaves out is that, 18 years earlier, Baker had come up with the same concept, for different reasons.

Baker grew up on a small fruit farm a few miles from Lake Ontario, and seems to have planned to go into the family business: His bachelor?s degree, from Cornell, was in fruit agriculture. He aspired to be a Cornell professor, but his widow, Jacoba, remembers his mentors advising him to work somewhere else first. He took a position as a cooperative extension agent?a liaison between land-grant universities and local communities. After earning a master?s in marketing at Penn State, Baker went to Purdue University for a Ph.D. in food science. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1949, and set up a poultry-products technology lab 10 years later.

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? Internet ...

To attract the potential customers you need and the higher sales you want, Affiliate marketing is an essential. You?ll learn some great tips about Affiliate marketing in this article. By following these suggestions you will have an increased chance for marketing success.

Take time to learn web design basics. There is a lot of HTML information online to help you learn web design. Dedicate a certain amount of time each day to learning web design and your website will be reaping the benefits before you know it.

You can increase your success at Affiliate marketing by creating a viral video with tags and uploading it. These videos can be backlinked to your site to increase exposure. This can help boost the number of visitors on your site regularly.

TIP! Viral videos can be an enormous help for generating traffic. Viral videos can be difficult to create, but when you strike it big you?re looking at view counts in the thousands or millions.

Try asking for feedback from customers who don?t buy anything. Ask them what you can do to get their business. There are many reasons people choose not to purchase a product.

Think about hosting a one-dollar sale for new clients. These things will help people spread the word about your company, while introducing your product or service to more people. You never know, you just may sell additional products too, once they come to your site. Increasing the traffic to your website will lead to an increase in sales.

The placement of ads is one of the simplest, yet most productive forms of Affiliate marketing. You can achieve this by using Google?s AdSense. For your effort and the reasonable cost, this is one of the best bargains around.

TIP! If you are good at writing, write an article about your business and submit it to magazines that accept submissions. Make sure you include your business information and website information in your articles.

Regular blogging can really infuse your affiliate marketing with success. A blog is a convenient tool for informing customers about new products and promotions. Also, a blog makes your website larger, making it more visible to search engines and increasing the number of visitors to your site in the long run.

One way to provide high-quality content and advance your Internet promotion goals is to secure interviews with respected authorities in your website?s niche. Audio and video can be used to write or make these interviews. Your interview will increase your own reputation through osmosis, and really high-profile interviewees will bring along fresh visitors with them, boosting your website?s traffic.

Stay on track with your advertising budget. You don?t want to waste money on something that is of no benefit to your business. When investing, you need to be sure that you?re going to get what need from it. That is why advertising using banners is a wise investment.

TIP! Knowing your competition is vital in internet marketing. There is competition for every niche that you could possibly work in.

Direct marketing is complementary to any Web marketing campaign. Get in touch with customers, via phone or email, to let them know about the specials you are offering. A local phone book or online directory can be an invaluable source of information as you prepare to contact customers.

In your online advertising, use words such as ?special edition? or ?limited edition?. People are especially interested in obtaining exclusive merchandise. Using those descriptions can entice prospective customers to make a spontaneous purchase.

A press release might help you to increase traffic, and it is a fantastic way to market your brand. Informative press releases that are clear and concise can help establish what you are offering in a professional way. This can elevate the quality of your product and increase your visibility.

TIP! If using images on your site, always include captions. Search engines factor in the relevancy of your caption text when determining if your site is a good fit for the keyword.

Creating an effective user interface where customers can view your products is important for variety and overall success. Be sure to offer plenty of ways for people to check out your products, while still properly organizing your site.

If you?re writing articles to market yourself online, stay focused on your goals. Know what kind of content you want to promote and make every effort to get your messages out clearly. Directories have different needs; some might want short articles, while others require long ones. With these goals and guidelines, you will be able to have excellent submissions.

Try offering incentives for referrals! Offer a freebie for a certain number of referrals to turn that one sale into multiple sales. People love free and this can get more traffic your way.

TIP! Design your website according to the best web design principles and fill it with valuable content. Your site or blog will be at the center of your online marketing efforts.

Your website needs to be as effective as possible in order to increase your marketing success. Make sure that your site is easy to read, contains engaging information and answers to questions visitors may have. Naturally, visitors stay longer on websites that they find attractive, interesting and useful.

Consider implementing mobile marketing in your business. Let visitors sign up for text alerts that will inform them of a big sale. It is an innovative way to reach a broader audience, while they are on the go.

A spot dedicated to reviews from customers is a great idea for your site. Customers like to post their actual experiences with your products and these can provide you with new sales, too.

TIP! You always have to have the evidence ready to back up any claims that you make in your marketing efforts. A lot of people simply don?t believe what they read.

Power up your internet promotion! Always keep your primary goal in mind when creating a landing page, and make sure that objective is apparent. The landing page should be focused on sales. It should be obvious to the viewer what it is that you are selling as soon as they arrive on the landing page! If the first page a visitor sees is overly complicated and hard to navigate, they will click away in the blink of an eye.

As mentioned earlier, your company can see a great increase in visibility through Web marketing. When regular advertising doesn?t give you the exposure you desire, Website marketing is a handy tool. A well-crafted online campaign can and link you to ideal customers all over the world, and using the tips you?ve just read can help you get started.

How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?

Since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, we at Slate have been wondering how many people are dying from guns in America every day.

That information is surprisingly hard to come by. The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, for example, has a tally atop its website of ?people shot in America.? That number, though, is an estimate, based on the number of gun injuries and deaths recorded by the CDC in 2008 and 2009, the most recent years for which statistics are available. It seems shocking that when guns are in the headlines every day, there?s no one attempting to create a real-time chronicle of the deaths attributable to guns in the United States.

Well, someone is. Since this summer, the anonymous creator of the Twitter feed @GunDeaths has been doing his best to compile those statistics, tweeting every reported death he can find. He was inspired, he told us in a phone interview, by the Aurora, Colo., shootings and simply wanted to call daily attention to the toll that guns take. Now Slate is partnering with @GunDeaths to create this interactive feature, ?Gun Deaths in America Since Newtown.?

Deaths since Newtown:

Age:

All

Adult

Teen

Child

Each victim under 13 years of age is designated "child"; from 13 to 17: "teen"; 18 and older: "adult."

Of course, this data is incomplete. Not all reports get caught by @GunDeaths? news alerts or his followers. Suicides, which are estimated to make up as much as 60 percent of gun deaths, typically go unreported. Nevertheless, we at Slate want to assemble this data as best we can.

And the more people who are paying attention, the better the data will be. You can help us draw a more complete picture of gun violence in America. If you know about a gun death in your community that isn?t represented here, please tweet @GunDeaths with a citation, and he?ll add it to his feed. (If you?re not on Twitter, you can email slatedata@gmail.com.) His data feeds our interactive feature.

And if you?d like to use this data yourself for your own projects, it?s open. You can download it here.

Home Improvement Made As Easy As Possible | - Home Decorating

Considering a home improvement project? Before you begin, safeguard yourself against disaster by learning as much as possible about your chosen plan of action. You should learn as much as you can in advance of the project you want to implement. The article below has ways that can help.

Do you feel a draft in your home? Using air as insulation is now possible. Air? Sounds strange, doesn?t it? This kind of insulation is not unlike the bubble wrap used to pack products for shipping. Air is pre-pumped into the cushions, which are then attached to your home?s walls and ceilings. This is an affordable option to insulate a drafty home.

There are many boring lampshades with no zest. Get cheap stencils at the crafts store, an ink pad or acrylic paint, and try dabbing the designs around the shade. By doing this, you will give your house a better look with more personality.

New light fixtures can brighten up bathrooms or kitchens on a budget. Track lights may be switched for lights that are sharper; these can be put in by a professional for under a grand. Try installing pendant fixtures in your kitchen.

There are many inexpensive projects that can add value to your home. You can add to the looks of your home by getting a new doorbell. People visiting your home will immediately notice your nice new doorbell.

When you are making exterior improvements, be sure to add a coat of paint and some decks. These are improvements that always add to the value of your home. A deck is a multi-purpose space. It can be used to entertain friends or relatives, or can serve as a place to relax with some bottled water after a hard day?s work.

When pre-planning your project, define a space where you are comfortable to place the resulting debris. Demolition can make quite a mess, and you will need a space for it. Your project will go more smoothly (and be safer to work on!) if you set aside a place for debris in advance instead of letting it pile up and get in the way.

Make sure to use granite tiles instead of slab when you make home improvements. A countertop slab costs more than $5,000. If you wish to use the tiles, they?re only about $300. Tiles will provide the look of granite you want for a sliver of the price.

Prior to starting an interior painting project, be sure and run a damp cloth on all walls and baseboards to get rid of dirt, grime and dust. Doing this will help the paint to properly adhere to your walls, and may even save you the trouble of applying an extra coat of paint.

Use the information you learned here to make the most of your home improvements. You can turn your home into your ideal residence with a little effort and know-how.

Gun Rights Support Runs Far Deeper Than Politics

BRYAN, Texas -- Adam Lanza's mother was among the tens of millions of U.S. gun owners. She legally had a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle and a pair of handguns, which her 20-year-old son used to kill 20 children and six adults in 10 minutes inside a Connecticut school.

In the raw aftermath of the second-worst school shooting in U.S. history, countless gun enthusiasts much like Lanza's mother complicate a gun-owning narrative that critics, sometimes simplistically, put at the feet of a powerful lobby and caricatured zealots. More civilians are armed in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world, with Yemen coming in a distant second, according to the independent Small Arms Survey in Geneva.

Take Blake Smith, a mechanical engineer who lives near Houston and uses an AR-15 style rifle in shooting competitions.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who famously claimed to have shot a coyote while jogging with a pistol holstered to his running shorts, has signed a half-dozen certificates applauding Smith as one of the state's top marksmen. "But I won't call myself a fanatic," said Smith, 54, whose father first let him handle a gun around age 6.

"I sit at a desk all day. And when I get out to the range, I don't hear any gunfire going on," said Smith, who likens his emotional detachment to his guns to the way he would feel about a car or any other machine. "I'm so intent on my sight alignment, my trigger pull, my position. I don't worry about anything. I don't think about anything. It's relieving. It's therapeutic. Everybody has to have their Zen."

Since the school shooting, President Barack Obama has asked for proposals on reducing gun violence that he can take to Congress in January, and he called on the National Rifle Association, the country's most powerful gun-rights organization, to join the effort.

Gun laws in the U.S. vary from state to state ? for instance, as of last month it is now legal to carry a gun in public view in Oklahoma ? and are defended by the firearms industry and the NRA. On Friday, the NRA broke a weeklong silence since the Connecticut massacre by calling for armed volunteers at public schools, prompting criticism from many quarters.

But in the U.S., gun-control advocates are up against a sizeable bloc of mainstream Americans for whom guns are central to their lives, whether for patriotism or personal sense of safety, or simply to occupy their spare time.

Dave Burdett, who owns an outdoors and adventure shop across the street from the sprawling Texas A&M University campus in College Station, says his affinity for guns is rooted in history, not sport.

"It isn't about hunting. Everyone says, `Well, I can understand having a sporting rifle, but not an AR-15," Burdett said. "But wait a second ? the idea of the Second Amendment was to preserve and protect the rights of individuals to have those guns."

"Remember that the (American) revolution was fought by citizen soldiers," he added. "To this day, that's one of the cornerstones of our military defense. We have an all-volunteer military."

An NRA poster picturing a bald eagle is taped to the glass door of his office. He started as a lawyer, dabbling in everything from commercial land to trying to block the deportation of an illegal immigrant, before seguing into selling guns.

When his daughter graduated with a business degree from Texas A&M, Burdett figured she would move somewhere cosmopolitan like Dallas and work in a downtown high-rise. She instead went to work in the store, built her own AR-15 out of spare parts and used it to join what her father described as the "let's-go-pig-hunting-tonight circuit." Those feral hog hunts often include high-powered rifles as well as night-vision goggles.

"The other thing is, shooting is fun. It really is," Burdett said.

Many think so. Smith, the mechanical engineer, said that includes teenage girls. At national shooting competitions, Smith has run into a group of girls around 13 or 14 years old who call themselves "The Pink Ladies," firing high-powered rifles at targets. He also recalls meeting Australians, whose country bans guns, who told him, "I love to shoot, so I'm going to the U.S."

Others add safety to the list of reasons for allowing people easy access to guns.

"To me it's obvious ? the more people that have guns, or at least in their homes, it's more of a criminal deterrent," said Bill Moos, a local taxidermist in the small town of Bryan, near College Station. Moos, who owns more than 30 guns, can be spotted any given morning, prowling his roughly 40-acre (16-hectare) ranch with his dogs and a shotgun slung over his shoulder.

He tells a story of standing in the post office one day and hearing about a suspect driving around, wanted by the police. He thought of the woman behind the counter near him.

"My first thought was, `How are you going to protect yourself?' Does she have a gun, in case someone tries to rob her?" he said. "It's the first thing you think of: How are you going to defend yourself?"

On the television in the corner of his workshop, above a stuffed gray fox and a clutch of animal jawbones dangling on a ring like a set of keys, Obama is holding his first press conference since the Connecticut tragedy. He's promising to send Congress legislation tightening gun laws and urging them to reinstate a ban on military-style assault weapons, like the one used by Lanza.

Moos turns down the volume.

"I guess it's something you get used to," he said of guns. "That you grow up around, and you enjoy them, and you accept the fact that you can own. It's a privilege. It's a whole different way of life. I guess I don't need three pick-ups and a Corvette. But I have them."

NY firemen's killer mapped out plan for slayings

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) ? The ex-con turned sniper who killed two firefighters wanted to make sure his goodbye note was legible, typing out his desire to "do what I like doing best, killing people" before setting the house where he lived with his sister ablaze, police said.

Police Chief Gerald Pickering said Tuesday that the 62-year-old loner, William Spengler, brought plenty of ammunition with him for three weapons including a military-style assault rifle as he set out on a quest to burn down his neighborhood just before sunrise on Christmas Eve.

And when firefighters arrived to stop him, he unleashed a torrent of bullets, shattering the windshield of the fire truck that volunteer firefighter and police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, drove to the scene. Fellow firefighter Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, who worked as a 911 dispatcher, was killed as well.

Two other firefighters were struck by bullets, one in the pelvis and the other in the chest and knee. They remained hospitalized in stable condition and were expected to survive.

On Tuesday, investigators found a body in the Spengler home, presumably that of the sister a neighbor said Spengler hated: 67-year-old Cheryl Spengler. Spengler's penchant for death had surfaced before. He served 17 years in prison for manslaughter in the 1980 hammer slaying of his grandmother.

But his intent was unmistakable when he left his flaming home carrying a pump-action shotgun, a .38-caliber revolver and a .223-caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and caliber weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., that killed 26.

"He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people," the chief said of a felon who wasn't allowed to possess weapons because of his criminal past. It was not clear how he got them.

The assault rifle was believed to be the weapon that struck down the firefighters. He then killed himself as seven houses burned on a sliver of land along Lake Ontario. His body was not found on a nearby beach until hours afterwards.

The motive was left unclear as well, Pickering said, even as authorities began analyzing a two- to three-page typewritten rambling note Spengler left behind.

He declined to reveal the note's full content or say where it was found. He read only one chilling line: "I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people."

Pickering added: "There was some rambling in there and some intelligence we need to follow up on."

It remained unknown what set Spengler off but a next-door neighbor, Roger Vercruysse, noted that he loved his mother, Arline, who died in October after living in the house in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes across the road from a lakeshore popular with recreational boaters.

Pickering said it was unclear whether the person believed to be Spengler's sister died before or during the fire.

"It was a raging inferno in there," Pickering said.

As Pickering described it and as emergency radio communications on the scene showed, the heavily armed Spengler took a position behind a small hill by the house as four firefighters arrived after 5:30 a.m. to extinguish the fire: two on a fire truck; two in their own vehicles.

Several firefighters went beneath the truck to shield themselves as an off-duty police officer who came to the scene pulled his vehicle alongside the truck to try to shield them, authorities said.

The first police officer who arrived chased and exchanged shots with Spengler, recounting it later over his police radio.

"I could see the muzzle blasts comin' at me. ... I fired four shots at him. I thought he went down," the officer said.

At another point, he said: "I don't know if I hit him or not. He's by a tree. ... He was movin' eastbound on the berm when I was firing shots." Pickering portrayed the officer as a hero who saved many lives.

The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com also has someone reporting "firefighters are down" and saying "got to be rifle or shotgun ? high-powered ... semi or fully auto."

Spengler had been charged with murder in his grandmother's death but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter, apparently to spare his family a trial. After he was freed from prison, Spengler had lived a quiet life on Lake Road on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario.

That ended when he left his burning home Monday morning, armed with his weapons, a lot of ammunition and a measure of hate.

"I'm not sure we'll ever know what was going through his mind," Pickering said.

Superstorm Sandy family home in time for the holiday | 9 On Your Side

By: Adriana Diaz, CBS News | 9 On Your Side

BROAD CHANNEL, NY - Twins Jolie and Jenna Lane are days from their first birthday, and hours from their first Christmas.

Two "firsts" parents Joe and Jennifer were afraid they wouldn't celebrate at home.

The Lanes bought their waterfront home a year ago, but Sandy ruined it.

Flood insurance didn?t cover all the repairs. And Jennifer and Joe drained their life savings trying to get pregnant. They lucked out with the twins, but that meant there was little left to fix up the house.

A volunteer group called ?New York says Thank You? stepped in to help.

The organization, formed in the aftermath of September 11th, rebuilds communities around the country in the wake of disasters.

Joe is a New York City Police detective, who spent months at the World Trade Center site. The organization spent 50 to 60 thousand dollars rebuilding his house.

The Lanes say celebrating Christmas with their girls in their own home is the best gift they could get.

New York says Thank You has identified 200 other 9/11 First responders who need help rebuilding from Sandy.

Sink said McBride, an attorney, had long suffered from heart problems.

McBride defeated Reno, who was U.S. attorney general under President Bill Clinton, in the Democratic primary to run against Bush. Before entering politics, he was managing partner at the prestigious Holland & Knight law firm.

Sink said McBride's true legacy was as a longtime civil rights champion.

Health care tax hikes for 2013 may be just a start

WASHINGTON (AP) ? New taxes are coming Jan. 1 to help finance President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. Most people may not notice. But they will pay attention if Congress decides to start taxing employer-sponsored health insurance, one of the options in play if lawmakers can ever agree on a budget deal to reduce federal deficits.

The tax hikes already on the books, taking effect in 2013, fall mainly on people who make lots of money and on the health care industry. But about half of Americans benefit from the tax-free status of employer health insurance. Workers pay no income or payroll taxes on what their employer contributes for health insurance, and in most cases on their own share of premiums as well.

It's the single biggest tax break allowed by the government, outstripping the mortgage interest deduction, the deduction for charitable giving and other better-known benefits. If the value of job-based health insurance were taxed like regular income, it would raise nearly $150 billion in revenue in 2013, according to congressional estimates. By comparison, wiping away the mortgage interest deduction would bring in only about $90 billion.

"If you are looking to raise revenue to pay for tax reform, that is the biggest pot of money of all," said Martin Sullivan, chief economist with Tax Analysts, a nonpartisan publisher of tax information.

It's hard to see how lawmakers can avoid touching health insurance if they want to eliminate loopholes and curtail deductions so as to raise revenue and lower tax rates. Congress probably wouldn't do away with the health care tax break, but limit it in some form. Such limits could be keyed to the cost of a particular health insurance plan, the income level of taxpayers, or a combination.

Many economists think some kind of limit would be a good thing, because it would force consumers to watch costs, and that could help keep health care spending in check. Obama's health law took a tentative step toward limits by imposing a tax on high-value health insurance plans. But that doesn't start until 2018.

Next spring will be three years since Congress passed the health care overhaul, but because of a long phase-in, many of the taxes to finance the plan are only now coming into effect. Medicare spending cuts that help pay for covering the uninsured have started to take effect, but they also are staggered. The law's main benefit, coverage for 30 million uninsured people, will take a little longer. It doesn't start until Jan. 1, 2014.

The biggest tax hike from the health care law has a bit of mystery to it. The legislation calls it a "Medicare contribution," but none of the revenue will go to the Medicare trust fund. Instead, it's funneled into the government's general fund, which does pay the lion's share of Medicare outpatient and prescription costs, but also covers most other things the government does.

The new tax is a 3.8 percent levy on investment income that applies to individuals making more than $200,000 or married couples above $250,000. Projected to raise $123 billion from 2013-2019, it comes on top of other taxes on investment income. And while it does apply to profits from home sales, the vast majority of sellers will not have to worry since another law allows individuals to shield up to $250,000 in gains on their home from taxation. (Married couples can exclude up to $500,000 in home sale gains.)

Investors have already been taking steps to avoid the tax, selling assets this year before it takes effect. The impact of the investment tax will be compounded if Obama and Republicans can't stave off the automatic tax increases scheduled at the end of the year if there's no budget agreement.

High earners will face another new tax under the health care law Jan. 1. It's an additional Medicare payroll tax of 0.9 percent on wage income above $200,000 for an individual or $250,000 for couples. This one does go to the Medicare trust fund.

Donald Marron, director of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, calls the health care law tax increases medium-sized by historical standards. The center, a joint project of the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, provides in-depth analysis on tax issues.

They also foreshadow the current debate about raising taxes on people with high incomes. "These were an example of the president winning, and raising taxes on upper-income people," said Marron. "They are going to happen."

Other health care law tax increases taking effect Jan. 1:

? A 2.3 percent sales tax on medical devices used by hospitals and doctors. Industry is trying to delay or repeal the tax, saying it will lead to a loss of jobs. Several economists say manufacturers should be able to pass on most of the cost.

? A limit on the amount employees can contribute to tax-free flexible spending accounts for medical expenses. It's set at $2,500 for 2013, and indexed thereafter for inflation.

??Zoo education exhibition an excellent event for the holidays

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Christmas and New Year holidays are around the corner. Are you thinking of activities that can both relax yourself and enrich your knowledge? The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) is inviting the public to visit the annual "Zoo Education Exhibition 2012 - The Most Extreme Animals in the World" roving exhibition.

Besides visiting the exhibition, members of the public can also visit the interesting scenic spots in various parks.

"Through the exhibition, we hope to arouse public interest in animal ecology and enhance public awareness of nature conservation," a spokesman for the department said.

The exhibition will be held at Tuen Mun Park, Yuen Long Park, Tai Po Waterfront Park and the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens (HKZBG) from today (December 24) to January 20 next year. The exhibition was held earlier in Kowloon Park and Hong Kong Park.

"Display panels well illustrated with lively photos and featuring information about 20 of the most extreme animals in the sea and the sky as well as on land will be put up in parks. Members of the public can learn more about the dimensions, weight, height and speed of these amazing animals," the spokesman said.

"They are shown with other interesting information about animals, like which animal on land is the largest or which snake is the fastest moving, on the display panels," he added.

While touring around the roving exhibition, members of the public are welcome to visit various specialised facilities introducing the animals in the parks. Visitors will not only enrich their knowledge on nature conservation, but also spend an extraordinary Christmas holiday.

The Reptile House in Tuen Mun Park has both indoor terraria and a courtyard terrarium displaying various species of reptiles.

Most of the reptiles are endangered species, such as the black pond turtle, the radiated tortoise, the pig-nosed turtle, the flat-backed spider tortoise, the spurred tortoise, the spider tortoise, the black and white tegu and the mangrove monitor.

It also has some reptile specimens, with textual and pictorial information, on display. Visitors can learn more about the distribution of each individual species in the world, its habitat and its diet.

Moreover, visitors to the HKZBG will be impressed by some 70 mammals, 300 birds and over 50 reptiles breeding in the park. They include endangered species like the buff-cheeked gibbon, the red-crowned crane and the Chinese alligator.

Visitors may also make use of the chance to visit the education and exhibition centre there to learn more about the characteristics of these animals.

Apart from characteristic facilities in these parks, the Insect House at Tai Po Waterfront Park exhibits various insect specimens. An amazing variety of precious birds in the Aviary Pagoda including the black-naped oriole, the silver-eared mesia and the Mount Omei liocichla will also win the hearts of visitors to Yuen Long Park.
