Football: Arsenal to make Henry offer

12/29/2011 10:58:45 AM

Frenchman Thierry Henry is set to be offered the chance to return to Arsenal on a two-month loan deal, according to reports.

The New York Red Bulls forward has been training at Emirates Stadium in a bid to maintain his fitness during the MLS off-season, and has reportedly impressed Arsene Wenger with his sharpness and attitude.

Wenger is believed to be targeting attacking reinforcements in January, both to cover the departures of Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh to the Africa Cup of Nations, and to ease the pressure on in-form captain Robin van Persie, who tops the English Premier League scoring charts.

Cologne striker Lukas Podolski has also been linked to a move to Arsenal, but Henry appears likely to be signed on a short-term deal, according to The Daily Mail.

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker said on Thursday he would be delighted to have Henry in the squad after being impressed by the 34-year-old in training.

"I am very happy training with (Henry), very happy. He is playing very, very good. I am happy to play against him in training and it is a great experience," the German said.

"He is a great opportunity for us, but I'm not the manager, I couldn't find a decision or what is possible for him or for us."

"In training he shows his class and to have him with us is great because he shows his attitude, his experience. He still has the same attitude he showed in a lot of games at Arsenal."

Henry remains Arsenal's all-time record goalscorer with 226 goals to his name between 1999 and 2007, and his outstanding contribution was recently honoured with the unveiling of a statue outside Emirates Stadium.

Petroplus shuts 3 oil refineries as cash runs out

Petroplus is to close three of its five oil refineries over the coming weeks because it has run out of money for crude supplies since bankers froze its credit lines abruptly this week.

Talks with the bankers have been "open and constructive" and will continue in the coming days, the financially troubled company said in a statement about the closures on Friday.

"In the meantime, the company will start temporary economic shutdowns of the Petit Couronne (France), Antwerp (Belgium) and Cressier (Switzerland) refineries in January 2012 given limited credit availability and the economic climate in Europe."

A victim of oversupply in European refining and of an investment strategy under former boss Thomas O'Malley that fell foul of an industry downturn, Petroplus and European government officials have been locked in talks with the 13 banks that froze a $1 billion facility it needed to buy crude oil.

Friday's announcement follows days of talks among bankers, government officials and the company aimed at keeping fuel flowing from Europe's biggest independent refiner.

A source close to the situation said a "provisional financing agreement" had been found to keep the talks going after intensive talks involving banks, the company and local governments.

And a Swiss local government official said he was urging the banking consortium to reconsider, although he did not confirm any breakthrough.

"I called yesterday to both Swiss banks, UBS and Credit Suisse , to insist on the local and strategic importance of the Cressier plant," said Thierry Grosjean, Economy Minister at the Swiss canton of Neuchatel, home to Petroplus's Cressier refinery.

Traders and analysts expect a large customer, supplier or banker could step in to keep plants running at some point.

But despite efforts so far, workers at the company's French and Belgian refineries were already preparing shutdowns on Sunday and Monday, according to officials and trade unions.

"There is no more crude coming in so the plant cannot work any more so we need to start shutting down all the plant's units on Monday, but this is a technical shutdown," said a spokeswoman for Petroplus in France. "The shutdown will take about a week."

The Cressier plant has enough crude to last between 15 and 20 days, according to the head of economic services in the canton of Neuchatel, Patrick Cossettini. Traders said that of Petroplus's five plants, the UK plant in Coryton might be the last to stop given its superior tank holding capacity.

WHY FREEZE NOW?

It remained unclear why the banks cut funding so abruptly just two months after allowing the troubled company to breach debt covenants without penalty.

Analysts and traders believe a worsening outlook for the industry and pressure from governments on banks to boost bank capital might be among the reasons for the unusual move, but one loan industry player thought otherwise.

"For me, this is a clear signal that something must have happened - banks don't do that. Banks would only act in such a manner if something has occurred. This is very untypical - some information is clearly missing," said a head of loan syndicate who is not involved in Petroplus financing but still did not want to be named.

Apart from Friday's statement, Swiss-based Petroplus has not responded to phone calls and emails from Reuters and has declined to elaborate on a December 27 announcement on the frozen credit lines.

O'MALLEY CONNECTION

The ailing company's latest financing problems throw a spotlight on Thomas O'Malley, the veteran oil refining entrepreneur who took over at the head of the company in 2006, but who in 2011 stepped down as chairman and reduced his personal stake in the business below 3 percent.

He remains CEO and chairman at PBF Energy, a joint venture of private equity firms Blackstone and First Reserve. In November, PBF announced plans to raise funds through an initial public offering.

Petroplus' refineries are at Cressier in Switzerland, Petit Couronne in France, Coryton in the United Kingdom, Antwerp in Belgium, and Ingolstadt in Germany. Together, they account for about 4.4 percent of European Union capacity.

But given the amount of slack in the industry, the closures are not expected to create a major supply issue, but governments, particularly in France where elections are coming up next year, are anxious to avoid closure.

The European refining sector has been struggling for years due to poor margins and weak demand for fuel products. French major Total shut its Dunkirk refinery at the start of 2010 and Petroplus itself closed down its Reichstett plant in eastern France in May 2011.

Petroplus's 13 lenders, which include BNP Paribas , Societe Generale , Natixis Credit Suisse , Morgan Stanley and Deutsche Bank , continued to negotiate on Friday.

The company's stock price has halved since Tuesday's announcement of the freeze, but had gained 8.5 percent to 1.78 euros 1400 GMT on Friday amid hopes the provisional financing agreement might mean a positive solution may be found.

In the Midst of Outages, Verizon Imposes New Fee (NewsFactor)

Verizon Wireless is pulling a Netflix of sorts. In the midst of three unexplained data outages in less than a month, the wireless carrier decided to start charging customers a $2 fee to pay their bill on its Web site. To say that customers are angry would be an understatement.

"[A] new $2 payment convenience fee will be instituted for customers who make single bill payments online or by telephone," Verizon Wireless announced on its Web site Thursday. The new charges are official beginning Jan. 15, but customers aren't wasting any time complaining about the "convenience fee."

Indeed, the social-media world is abuzz with complaints over the new fee in a way that's reminiscent of the recent Bank of America debit-card-fee drama. Bank of America backpedaled under pressure. So far, Verizon is holding its course. Although the company now blames its data outages on growing pains, the company isn't yet responding to the latest complaints.

Worst Move Ever?

"As if Verizon doesn't make enough money already. I prefer to not use the automatic payments so that I can make sure I have enough money in my account each month. I always pay my bill within a few days of receiving the e-mail," Christina Budd wrote on Verizon Wireless' Facebook page Friday morning. "How about you reward the people who pay on time, instead of punishing them?"

Meanwhile, Matt Beggs wrote, "I hope you enjoy losing almost $200 a month because you wanted to get another $2 out of me." Others took the occasion to start complaining about Verizon's Total Equipment Coverage. Still others reverted to the good old-fashioned "boo" on the wireless carrier's Facebook page. One Facebook follower posted the e-mail addresses of Verizon executives.

"OK, so I see you want to charge me $2 to pay my bill online. I have 15 months to go on my contract. I have figured I can cut $100 a month off my bill," writes Bentz Kirby on Verizon's Facebook page. "So, I will trade you my savings of $1,500 for your rip-off of $30. Then, when my contract is up, I will move my phone lines to another company and you will lose that income stream too. So, enjoy your $2 a month while you lose in the long run. Worst move ever by you, Verizon."

Communications Snafu

"Part of this uproar is based on an incomplete or inaccurate consumer understanding of what's going on. The belief initially was that Verizon was going to charge people for making all online bill payments. It's only 'one-time' payments, according to the company," said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence.

More broadly, people believe there are zero costs incurred by Verizon for online billing, he said, so there's a perception that the company is trying to take advantage of customers unfairly or unjustifiably.

"This PR snafu isn't as bad as Netflix, which had several in a concentrated period of time," Sterling concluded. "But it does illustrate how companies are no longer at liberty to simply impose changes unilaterally on the public without risk to their reputations and brands."

7moments Is A Beautiful New Way To Share Private Photos In A Group

Screen-Shot-2011-12-28-at-19.06.04We're all familiar with the pain of having to share photos with people. I'm not talking about the staff party album on Facebook, I'm talking about moments that matter - the family holidays, the weddings, big days like those. And this remains an ongoing issue. We can share Dropbox folders all we like. Everything still has to be downloaded and the interface does not suit viewing, especially on tablets. We can ask friends and family to sign up to a private Flickr group, but that's still another hurdle. Lots of photo and file sharing services are rubbish and many people remain afraid of Facebook's now quite public nature. Now, a new startup out of Berlin has come up with something it calls the 'Dropbox for photos' where you can privately exchange photos in a group: 7moments.

?It was lots of fun last year,? says Missy Towery, who is helping to coordinate the event for Canton Main Street.? ?It?s a great way to spend a cold winter afternoon with your friends, and some of the holes that bar owners came up with were a real challenge to get through. Everybody had a great time, and we raised a considerable amount of money to help with downtown area signage, once the new streetscape construction is completed.?
Registration will begin at Official Time Out at 11 a.m.? Lunch specials will be available, and the tournament will officially start at noon. Transportation will be available between Generations Bar & Grill and the downtown area taverns.
The cost for a four-person team to enter is $60.

Tsunami debris already arriving, B.C. mayor says

The coastal community of Tofino, B.C., spent the Christmas season mentally preparing for the grim task of collecting, sorting and cataloguing debris from the tsunami that devastated parts of coastal Japan early this year.

Mayor Perry Schmunk is certain that items that were washed away in the March 11 disaster in northern Japan have already made it to B.C. shores, in particular at the surfing capital of Long Beach.

"Definitely this stuff is increasing in incidence that is coming ashore," Schmunk said, pointing to some lumber with Japanese export stamps on it.

Although plastic water bottles with Japanese labels began washing ashore near Tofino at the beginning of December, some locals believed them to be typical ocean garbage.

Schmunk said that what has appeared since then is definitely not the normal garbage.

"There [are] some personal items starting to show up, things like a toothbrush, socks ? that sort of thing. Again, not the typical bottles," he told CBC News on Monday.

He said it is just the tip of a massive amount of debris predicted to be shifted by ocean currents toward the B.C. coast in 2014.

"We are starting communication with the other government agencies because, potentially, this will be a much bigger problem than us at the municipal level can respond to," Schmunk said.

B.C. has jurisdiction over hazards, bodies

The B.C. government has said it will begin working with national and municipal officials in January to prepare for arrival of the debris, but the task could be overwhelming even with strong federal co-operation and support.

"We're starting those conversations with the different agencies involved, namely, the Ministry of Environment, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Integrated Land Management Bureau, which in B.C. is responsible for the beaches themselves, and the Emergency Management Agency of B.C."

Schmunk said that the province has jurisdiction over many potential health and safety matters that could arise, including testing debris for possible radioactive contamination from the Fukushima nuclear reactor ruptures.

The province would also handle human remains that are found anywhere on the coast.

As many as 21,000 people were killed in the earthquake and tsunami, and the bodies of approximately 8,500 of those have not yet been recovered.

Schmunk said that many of the personal effects that wash ashore could have belonged to the victims, and would hold a great deal of significance for surviving family members.

"We'll look to handle a lot of what could come ashore with some great sensitivity," Schmunk said.

"We are asking everybody that does come in contact with anything that does come ashore that they deal with it with respect."

Website of photos proposed

Volunteers in and around the town of Tofino have so far been collecting debris combed from the beaches, but it isn't a large volume so far.

Schmunk has proposed that photos of the finds could be posted online.

"Some of the residents in town, myself included, have photographed these items and we'll probably create a common website so that people can search through these photos," he said.

"There's definitely the potential for some of the stuff that comes ashore to be of significant personal value."

In October, scientists in Hawaii estimated that as much as 18 million tonnes of material could have been washed into the ocean, and estimated the debris field to be spread out over an area the size of the state of California.

Brett Keisel is not 'just a bearded guy from Wyoming,' he is a local treasure whose abundant and tireless charity work is his way of saying thanks for what he and other Steelers receive from the community

The Pro Bowl rosters will be announced Tuesday night during -- I know this will be hard to believe -- a made-for-television gala on the NFL Network. Don't be surprised if Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel makes the AFC squad. He has been that good all season. He has been the best, most consistent player on a stout defense that has led the team to an 11-4 record and the AFC playoffs.

But, if Keisel is named to the Pro Bowl -- quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and safety Troy Polamalu appear to be the Steelers' only locks -- it won't be his greatest honor. Earlier this month, he was the team's nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, which goes to the player who combines on-field excellence with outstanding community service. It's the league's highest honor -- better than any of the player of the year awards -- if you think about what's really important. The winner will be announced during Super Bowl XLVI week in Indianapolis.

Johnny Unitas won the first NFL Man of the Year award in 1970. Payton won it in '77, and the award was named in his honor after his death in '99. Former Pitt quarterback Dan Marino won it in '98. Past Steelers winners were Franco Harris, Joe Greene, Lynn Swann and Jerome Bettis.

"Man, those guys are living legends," Keisel said. "I'm just a bearded guy from Wyoming."

Let's start with that beard.

With Keisel, that's the only place to start.

The beard is famous, to the point it has taken on its own personality. Keisel swears it has great power. I think he really believes it helped the Steelers get to the Super Bowl last season. He's convinced it will get the team there again this year and finish the job with a win in the big game.

You saw the beard squished under Keisel's chinstrap Saturday when the Steelers beat the St. Louis Rams, 27-0, at Heinz Field. You see it on a variety of T-shirts all over town. You see it in one of Polamalu's hilarious national television commercials for a hair-care company. After the Steelers season ends -- after Super Bowl XLVI, Keisel insists -- you'll see it shaved off in public for charity for the second consecutive year.

"As heartbreaking as it was for us to lose the Super Bowl last season, it was heartwarming to come home and do something good with the beard," Keisel said. "We were able to throw an event together in about a week where I shaved it off and we raised $40,000 for Children's Hospital. It wasn't me that raised that money. It was the city of Pittsburgh. I was just glad to be a part of it. Children's Hospital is very dear to me because of [teammate] Aaron Smith's situation and the help they've given [his son] Elijah."

Elijah Smith was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008 when he was 4 and is cancer-free today. "Had his last treatment Friday," Aaron Smith gushed after the game against the Rams. "After three years, two months and two days!"

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation also is close to Keisel's heart. He got involved with the charity six years ago and has devoted countless hours to it.

"The first function I went to, this little girl, Emma, who must have been about 4 at the time, came running up to me and gave me the biggest hug," Keisel said. "She had her backpack with her oxygen and the tubes in her nose and she tells me, 'Thank you so much for coming to my party!' She just stole my heart."

Keisel has worked hard to spread the word about Cystic Fibrosis. You see him on television doing a public-service announcement with a little boy named Anthony, who has the disease, which frequently attacks the lungs. "A lot of great research is being done," Keisel said. "Kids are living longer and they aren't on oxygen all day anymore. They're really making strides toward finding a cure."

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation had one of its big fund-raisers -- the 65 Roses Sports Auction -- Dec. 1 at a Downtown restaurant. Keisel was honorary chairman and brought many of his teammates with him, including Roethlisberger, James Farrior, Casey Hampton, Heath Miller, Ziggy Hood and Cameron Heyward.

"The guys never hesitate," Keisel said. "It's something easy for us to do and it means so much to the kids ...

"I look at it this way. The city we're in and the position we're in, we have to give something back. The Pittsburgh Steelers mean so much to this city and people give us so much. How do we not give something back? That's what I try to tell the young guys. 'Plenty of people need our help. Find something close to you and get involved with it.' "

Keisel also has devoted efforts to the American Heart Association, the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, Animal Friends of Pittsburgh, the Salvation Army's Project Bundle Up and the Read Across America program.

The man rested Sunday.

He spent a quiet Christmas at his home with his wife, Sarah, and children, Jacob and Grace.

Clearly, Keisel has found plenty of time for his day job. This has been his best season. "I would say so," he agreed, grinning behind that beard.

Keisel long has been a big part of the Steelers defense, which ranks No. 1 in the NFL. It's hard to put up big stats as a 3-4 defensive end, but he leads the team with 33 quarterback pressures. He has broken up eight passes with his long arms. He has three sacks.

"I think I've been productive," Keisel said. "I've tried to be a leader for the young guys."

It should be enough to get Keisel on the Pro Bowl roster. He was named as a first alternate last season and made the team when Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney gave up his spot because of an injury. Keisel didn't get to go to Hawaii for the game because the Steelers played in the Super Bowl. He would love to have to miss the Pro Bowl again this season for the same reason.

"I just want us to finish the season strong the way I know we can," Keisel said. "It's about playing good ball at the right time."

Keisel plans on coming back next year for his 11th NFL season. He will turn 34 Sept. 19. He is signed through the 2012 season.

"I still feel like I can compete and do my job at a high level. As long as I can do that, it's a blessing for me to go out and play. I just love the competition. After football, I'll never do anything that comes close to giving you that feeling you have when you come out of the tunnel at Heinz Field."

Or maybe not.

"I guess I can hunt grizzly bears with a knife," Keisel said.

Does that sound like a bearded guy from Wyoming or what?

It's nice to think Keisel will be able to put off that next challenge for another year or two.

The Steelers still need him.

The community needs him.

NFL Network's Marshall Faulk, a Hall of Fame running back and designated studio Cowboys grinch, is not a believer in Felix Jones as a No. 1 back. "At some point in time, [the Cowboys] are going to have to believe what I have been saying: Felix Jones is an accessory."

Most Weight Regained by Older Women Is Fat, Study Finds (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Some weight regain is common after weight loss, but in older women many of those regained pounds return as fat mass rather than muscle mass, according to a new study.

How this affects strength and health needs further study, but experts said the findings underscore the downside of so-called yo-yo dieting.

The study included 78 women, average age 58, who had lost about 25 pounds during a previous diet study. Looking at data on the regainers, the researchers found a change in body composition.

"A third of the weight lost was muscle," said Dr. Barbara Nicklas, a gerontologist at the J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging and Rehabilitation at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

"The proportion of weight they gained [back] as muscle was 20 percent." That left them with more fat and less muscle.

The researchers evaluated the women's body weight, lean mass and fat mass before the diet, right after weight loss, and six and 12 months later. At one year, the researchers zeroed in on 68 women for whom complete records were available. Fifty-two (76 percent) had regained some weight, including 11 who weighed more than at the study's start. Sixteen were still losing weight.

The study was published Dec. 13 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The women in the study were sedentary, and their average body mass index (BMI) at the start was 33. BMI is a calculation based on height and weight, and a BMI of 30 is considered obese.

The finding may not apply to women who are less overweight, Nicklas said. She suspects the results would also apply to older men, but perhaps not to younger men or women.

"Some research shows [younger people] regain their weight in the same muscle-fat proportion they lost [it]," she said.

There is a possibility, Nicklas said, that a higher proportion of fat with the regained weight may simply reflect normal aging.

The study of regain after weight loss is a relatively new area, said Dr. Alice Lichtenstein, a professor of nutrition science at Tufts University, Boston, who is familiar with the study.

"There was a wide range of variability in both weight loss and regain among the postmenopausal women studied," she said. The shift in body composition toward more fat than muscle didn't occur in all women, she said.

Even so, she said the clear message is to try to avoid becoming overweight to begin with, and to keep off the excess weight once you lose it.

"For those women who have gained excess body weight and are then successful in losing it, this finding may add a bit more impetus to maintain the weight loss," Lichtenstein said.

But the study shouldn't deter overweight individuals from trying to slim down, she said.

Protein consumption is important to help minimize the amount of muscle loss, Nicklas said.

U.S. dietary guidelines recommend 0.8 grams of protein (or more) for every 2.2 pounds of body weight. For instance, a woman who weighs 200 pounds should take in about 70 to 90 grams of protein, Nicklas said. A 5.3-ounce container of Greek yogurt has about 13 grams or more of protein, she noted.

Exercise and a balanced diet can help maintain weight loss, Nicklas advised.

As Iraq Smolders, Kurds Sit on Oil Riches

IRBIL, Iraq (UPI) -- As Iraq looks like collapsing into another sectarian free-for-all, with energy resources a key prize, the semi-autonomous Kurdish region is like an island of stability and security.

In large part, that's because it's sitting on its own energy treasure house, an estimated 60 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, more than Libya's entire reserves, and 45 billion barrels of oil, roughly the amount Britain has produced from its North Sea fields.

"Sweeping changes ? have taken place in Iraq's semi-autonomous northern region over the past decade, changes driven by the wealth that lies underneath its desolate landscape," observed the Financial Times.

"The days when Kurdistan was an economic backwater are over," Prime Minister Barham Salih told Kurdistan's first regional oil and gas conference in Irbil, the Kurdish capital, in November.

But the Kurdistan Regional Government, which runs the three northern provinces that constitute the Kurdish enclave, is locked in a bitter battle with the central government in Baghdad over oil rights and revenue-sharing as well as territory.

This seemingly intractable dispute has in recent weeks spread to other provinces that now seek more autonomy, including oil-rich Basra in the south, which contains two-thirds of Iraq's known oil reserves of 143.1 billion barrels.

With the Shiite-dominated government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki showing increasing signs of cracking down on minority Sunnis and Kurds, marginalizing them politically and concentrating all power in the hands of the majority Shiites now that U.S. forces have withdrawn, the stage seems set for major turmoil.

The KRG recently upped the stakes dramatically by signing an agreement with Exxon Mobil, the world's largest oil company, Oct. 18 to explore six blocks widely believed to be sure-fire gushers.

Exxon was the first international oil major to venture into Kurdistan, defying Maliki's government, which insists Baghdad alone can make such deals.

Exxon faces stiff reprisals by Baghdad but refuses to back down.

Meantime, as political infighting intensifies with the departure of the Americans, the Kurds and Sunnis are quitting Maliki's shaky coalition amid a wave of arrests by his security forces.

So Kurdistan, which also claims the Kirkuk oilfields in the north, is likely to be in the eye of the storm.

The Kurds' big problem is that their territory in the northeastern corner of Iraq is landlocked and to get their oil out they have to use state pipelines controlled by Baghdad.

Kurdish oil is pumped northward through twin pipelines to neighboring Turkey's Ceyhan terminal on the Mediterranean, so any break with Baghdad means no outlet for Kurdish crude.

But the Kurds have found a possible ally in Turkey, even though Ankara's a bitter opponent of the Kurds' burning ambition for an independent state.

The Turks fear an independent Kurdistan will encourage their own Kurdish rebels in their 20-year separatist war, as well as the wider region's 20 million Kurds.

Even so, Ankara may find Iraqi Kurds' support for the Turkish rebels might be dampened if Turkey gives the KRG separate access to Ceyhan.

Turkey, with no energy resources of its own, is particularly eager to import natural gas to fuel its power stations, possibly via a new pipeline from Kurdistan.

"The large deposits of natural gas in Iraqi Kurdistan and a booming bilateral trade -- together with a better mutual security understanding -- have led to much-improved relations," the Financial Times' Commodities Editor Javier Blas reported.

The presence of senior Turkish officials at the Irbil oil and gas conference testified to that.

"Turkey is even talking about connecting an export pipeline from Kurdistan to the projected Nabucco pipeline which would link the gas-rich Caucasus and Central Asia to energy-hungry European nations," said Blas.

Kurdistan is currently capable of producing 100,000 barrels of oil per day. That's scheduled to hit 175,000 bpd in 2012.

But if Exxon Mobil or any of the 40 smaller outfits that also have contracts with the KRG strike it big, KRG Natural Resources Minister Ashti Hawrami says production could reach 1 million bpd by 2015.

If Iraq starts to fragment, that could convince other oil majors to invest in Kurdistan.

Dean College in Franklin gets $100K to review general courses

Dean College officials say they will take a harder look into the effectiveness of the institution?s general education courses in the coming year, thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Davis Educational Foundation.

?The grant is going to be used to do a deep examination of our general education curriculum,? said Melissa Read, assistant vice president for academic affairs. ?It?s all about the student learning. Are students learning what we want them to and what we believe they need to know in order to prepare for their next step??

Read said that Dean College begins the process of re-examining its general education courses every five years, and then rolls out the resulting changes so that there is continuous progress.

The difference this time around is that the $100,000 grant allows Dean College to spend more time debating the advantages and disadvantages of the changes, with faculty members as well as administration, and of helping faculty become adjusted to those changes with week-long summer and winter training sessions, which are called ?institutes.?

?What the grant allows us to do is carve out time.? Read said. ?We?ve never had the resources to do that so that?s really exciting.?

Past assessments of the general education courses resulted in a complete redesign of those courses in the mid-90s and a later, tailored change to keep students testing into remedial courses on track to get their degree.

Read said the college does not yet have an idea of what changes it will make because a team of faculty members and administrators need to look at recently collected data.

?We?re approaching this with a very open mind,? Read said. ?(Grant money) is tremendously helpful, particularly at small colleges. People work hard and we?re running in lots of different directions.?

Read did note that the college will roll out any changes by the fall of 2013.

Teens choose water when calorie count of sugary beverages is easier to understand

Teens choose water when calorie count of sugary beverages is easier to understand

Friday, December 16, 2011

Thirsty? You may be more inclined to reach for plain old H2O if you knew how many calories are in sugar-sweetened beverages; this is according to a new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. They examined the effect of providing clear and visible caloric information about sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda and fruit juice on the number of sugar-sweetened beverage purchases at neighborhood stores, and found that providing easily understandable caloric information, specifically in the form of a physical activity equivalent, may reduce the likelihood of sugar-sweetened beverage purchases among adolescents by as much as half. The results are featured in a recent issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

"People generally underestimate the number of calories in the foods and beverages they consume," said Sara Bleich, PhD, assistant professor with the Bloomberg School's Department of Health Policy and Management. "Providing easily understandable caloric information?particularly in the form of a physical activity equivalent, such as running?may reduce calorie intake from sugar-sweetened beverages and increase water consumption among low-income black adolescents."

Researchers conducted the study at four corner stores located in low-income, predominately black neighborhoods in Baltimore, Md. For the intervention, one of three caloric information signs were randomly posted with the following information: "Did you know that a bottle of soda or fruit juice has about 250 calories?" (absolute caloric count); "Did you know that a bottle of soda or fruit juice has about 10 percent of your daily calories?" (percentage of total recommended daily intake); and "Did you know that working off a bottle of soda or fruit juice takes about 50 minutes of running?" (physical activity equivalent). They collected data for 1,600 beverage sales to black adolescents, aged 12-18 years, including 400 during a baseline period and 400 for each of the 3 caloric-condition interventions. Researchers found that providing participants with any caloric information significantly reduced the odds of sugar-sweetened beverage purchases by 40 percent relative to the baseline of no information. Of the three caloric-condition interventions, the physical activity equivalent was most effective, reducing the odds of black adolescents purchasing a sugar-sweetened beverage by 50 percent.

Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda, sport drinks, energy drinks and fruit drinks has been associated with obesity and is highest among minority and lower income adolescents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one third of U.S. adults and 17 percent of U.S children are obese. Obesity increases the risk of many adverse health conditions including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure.

"Because of the inclusion of mandatory calorie labeling in the recent health reform bill, it is critical to explore the most effective strategies for presenting caloric information to consumers on fast food restaurant menu boards," suggest the study's authors.

Playstation Vita Has Japanese Enthusiasts Lining Up In Thousands

TOKYO ? Sony's long-awaited PlayStation Vita portable game machine hit stores in Japan on Saturday as thousands of game enthusiasts lined up early in the morning to be among the first to buy it.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is predicting brisk sales, even though the launch may have missed some holiday shoppers. A successful debut would help the company offset the rest of its struggling business. Sony projects a loss of more than $1 billion for the fiscal year through March 2012, which would be its fourth straight annual loss.

In Tokyo's Ikebukuro shopping district, some 300 game enthusiasts lined up outside a major electronics chain that opened a few hours earlier than usual for the event. Many of the purchasers had made advance orders on the Internet so they could start playing immediately.

The device is a touch-interface and motion-sensitive handheld seen as a successor to the PlayStation Portable. Gamers can connect over cellphone networks and Wi-Fi hotspots, and use GPS location-tracking technology.

Television footage showed some shoppers unwrapping their new purchases and starting to try them out at the store.

"I'm so happy to see so many people lining up for PS Vita so early in the morning," Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Hiroshi Kono wrote in his official blog after touring several Tokyo stores. "I can tell they had anxiously waited for today's launch."

For the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment giant, the Vita is the biggest product launch since the PlayStation 3 console five years ago. It's also accompanied by two dozen software products ? the largest number of launch titles in PlayStation history.

The Vita has front and back cameras, a touchscreen in front, a touch pad on the back and two knob-like joysticks. It will enable gamers to play against each other using PlayStation 3 consoles over the Internet-based PlayStation Network, a system that was hit with a massive hacking attack earlier this year.

Vita's launch will heat up competition with rival Nintendo Co.'s 3DS. Nintendo Co.'s 3DS had a disappointing start despite the company's efforts to market its 3-D technology, with critics complaining about a lack of interesting games. Nintendo ended up slashing prices on the 3DS within six months.

The companies are challenged by the rise of smartphones and tablets, through which casual gamers play inexpensive and simple games like the mega-hit "Angry Birds."

The PS Vita goes on sale in North America and Europe on Feb. 22.

Protesters 'Occupy Birmingham' With Signs, Slogans, Grievances - Birmingham, MI Patch

Birmingham Patch:

More than 50 people from Birmingham and surrounding cities show up at Martha Baldwin Park on Saturday afternoon to protest income inequality, a corrupt federal government and more.

There were dozens of reasons why more than 50 protesters came out to Martha Baldwin Park to participate in Occupy Birmingham, but for longtime Birmingham resident and park trustee Elaine Moore, she was there because of the legacy of one of Birmingham's original activists.

"She was active in almost everything in this town to improve civic life," Moore said of the woman who helped found the Baldwin Public Library and whose name graces the park where the protest -- an offshoot of the larger Occupy Wall Street movement -- took place Saturday afternoon. "Martha lives in this event."

PocketCloud Explore arrives for Android, enables file searching and viewing across multiple computers

A new product has hit the Android Market and we think you might find it quite nifty. Known as PocketCloud Explore, the app allows users to search for and view files across their PCs and Macs, all without ever needing to surrender data to the cloud. Simple file management is also part of the game, as users can remotely create, rename and delete both folders and documents, as well as upload files from their smartphone to the remote destination. The basic version of PocketCloud Explore retails for $4.99, which is limited to two associated computers. For users juggling additional boxes and lappies, the developer plans to introduce a premium service that will allow access to a greater number of systems. Even the basic product, however, offers unlimited transfers, which means your files will always be within reach. Curious for more? You'll find the full PR after the break.

Democrats abandoning millionaire surtax proposal (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Democrats are abandoning their demand for a surtax on millionaires to help finance payroll tax cuts in a sign that lawmakers are trying to broker a compromise on Congress' highest-profile year-end dispute.

Even so, there is no clear path to bipartisan agreement on the legislation, which would prevent an automatic Social Security tax hike on 160 million workers and the expiration of jobless benefits for people who have been out of work the longest. Both would occur on Jan. 1 without congressional action.

In another squabble, a shutdown of most of government looms beginning Saturday. Both parties would like to approve a compromise $1 trillion measure financing dozens of agencies through next September. But that bill has become entangled with the fight over the payroll tax legislation.

Time's Person of the Year: 'The Protester' (Politico)

The honor of Time magazine?s 2011 ?Person of the Year? goes to ?the protester? ? from the demonstrators across the Arab world to the Occupy Wall Street movement that continues to make headlines.

?In the U.S., three acute and overlapping money crises ? tanked economy, systemic financial recklessness, gigantic public debt ? along with ongoing revelations of double dealing by banks, new state laws making certain public-employee-union demands illegal and the refusal of Congress to consider even slightly higher taxes on the very highest incomes mobilized Occupy Wall Street and its millions of supporters,? Kurt Andersen writes in the cover story about the protesters.

The beginning of a year of protests began in Tunisia, where a 26-year-old street vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in December 2010, the magazine says. The event set off the beginning of the ?Arab Spring? revolution, which spread a spirit of protest throughout the U.S., and more recently, Russia.

?Leadership has come from the bottom of the pyramid, not the top,? writes Time?s managing editor Rick Stengel. ?For capturing and highlighting a global sense of restless promise, for upending governments and conventional wisdom, for combining the oldest of techniques with the newest of technologies to shine a light on human dignity and, finally, for steering the planet on a more democratic though sometimes more dangerous path for the 21st century, the Protester is Time?s 2011 Person of the Year.?

In an appearance on CNN Wednesday, Time?s deputy international editor Bobby Ghosh called 2011 the year in which ?the common man did remarkably uncommon things.?

?They?ve changed the international discussion around the economy, around dictatorship, around whether stability is more important than the people?s right to change. They?ve force us to think of the world in profoundly new way,? said Ghosh. ?There are no certainties anymore in the world, and in a good way.?

The four runners-up were Special-Ops commander William McRaven, Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei, Rep. Paul Ryan and England?s beloved new princess, Kate Middleton.

McRaven, who commanded the helicopter assault against Osama bin Laden?s compound in Pakistan and briefed Obama in real time during the top-secret operation, represents the ?patient and ingenious work by U.S. intelligence agencies? in the country?s battle against al-Qaeda,? the magazine said.

?Through a combination of hard work, good timing and possibly suicidal guts, the Wisconsin Republican managed to harness his party to a dramatic plan for dealing with America?s rapidly rising public debt,? Time wrote of Ryan.

Last year?s Person of the Year was Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg ? the recognition went to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke in 2009 and President Barack Obama in 2008.

Afghanistan allies pledge to stay for long haul

Martin Meissner / AP

German chancellor Angela Merkel and Afghanistan's president Hamid Karzai, center, with the foreign ministers and delegation members at the international Afghanistan conference in Bonn on Monday.

By Reuters

BONN, Germany -- Foreign governments pledged on Monday to support Afghanistan long after allied troops go home, with or without a political settlement with insurgents once seen as the best way to prevent a new civil war.

At a conference of more than 80 countries but boycotted by Pakistan, they said even after most foreign combat troops leave in 2014, the Afghan government will not be allowed to meet the fate of its Soviet-era predecessor, which collapsed in 1992.

"The United States intends to stay the course with our friends in Afghanistan," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said. "We will be there with you as you make the hard decisions that are necessary for your future."

Hosts Germany sought to signal Western staying power in the country, where al-Qaida sheltered under Taliban protection before the Sept. 11 attacks, at the gathering in Bonn.

"We send a clear message to the people of Afghanistan: We will not leave you on your own. We will not leave you in the lurch," said German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle.

Ten years after a similar conference held to rebuild Afghanistan, the Afghan war is becoming increasingly unpopular in Western public opinion -- especially since U.S. forces found and killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan on May 2 in a raid that removed a central pretext of the 2001 invasion.

Western countries are under pressure to spend money reviving flagging economies at home rather than propping up a government in Kabul widely criticized for being corrupt and ineffective.

And as expected, delegates at the Bonn conference steered clear of making specific pledges to make up a shortfall in funding for Afghanistan estimated by the World Bank at some $7 billion a year from the end of 2014.

U.S.-Pakistan relations, a new 'all-time low'?

For now, nobody wants to show their hand too clearly in the hope that someone else -- from the United States to Europe, the Gulf to Asia -- will come forward to foot a share of the bill.

Brewing confrontations pitting Washington against Pakistan and Iran, two of Afghanistan's most influential neighbors, have also added to despondency over the outlook for the war.

Pakistan boycotted the meeting after NATO aircraft killed 24 of its soldiers on the border with Afghanistan in a Nov. 26 attack the alliance called a "tragic" accident.

But delegates from Russia to Iran to China, all uneasy about the U.S. military presence in their neighborhood, were nonetheless able to agree with Western powers "the main threat to Afghanistan's security and stability is terrorism."

"In this regard, we recognize the regional dimensions of terrorism and extremism, including terrorist safe havens, and emphasize the need for sincere and result-oriented regional cooperation..." a conference statement.

Pakistan is accused by Washington and Kabul of providing "safe havens" to insurgents to use to counter the influence of rival India. Pakistan says it being used as a scapegoat for the U.S. failure to bring stability to Afghanistan.

Scaling back objectives
The mood at the Bonn conference was a far cry from the early days of the Afghan war when, fresh from toppling the Taliban, Western powers hoped to bring permanent peace to a country which has now been at war for more than three decades.

But with problems of insecurity, governance, corruption and narcotics inside Afghanistan, compounded by insurgent sanctuaries in Pakistan, objectives have been scaled back.

By the time of a conference in London on Afghanistan in January 2010, Western governments had agreed insurgents could be brought into peace talks if they were willing to cut ties with al Qaeda, give up violence and respect the Afghan constitution.

But even that goal has proved elusive. Embroynic contacts with the Taliban have yielded little, and foreign governments have been preparing increasingly for a scenario in which there is no peace settlement with the Taliban even before the before most foreign combat troops leave in 2014.

The aim now is to leave behind a government which is just about good enough to survive, even if fighting persists in parts of the country and the Taliban insurgency remains active.

Some are still hoping Pakistan will use its influence to deliver the Afghan Taliban into a political settlement.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai told reporters Pakistan had missed a good opportunity to discuss its own issues and the future of Afghanistan by not attending the Bonn conference. "But it will not stop us from cooperating together," he said.

Asked what he wanted Pakistan to do to help bring peace in Afghanistan, he said: "Close the sanctuaries, arrange a purposeful dialogue with those Taliban who are in Pakistan."

Clinton said she expected Pakistan to play a constructive role in Afghanistan, even as she voiced disappointment that Islamabad chose not to attend the conference.

But British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that Afghanistan could still have a bright future even if the Taliban were not brought into a political settlement.

"It may take a longer time to bring about our objectives but we should not be deterred at all by Taliban reluctance to come to the table..." he told the BBC.

Foreign governments were also determined to try to dispel at least some of the pessimism seeping into the Afghan project.

Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna, whose country became the first to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Afghanistan -- much to the irritation of Pakistan -- pledged India would keep up its heavy investment in a country whose mineral wealth and trade routes made it "a land of opportunity."

In a rare positive development, Clinton said the United States would resume paying into a World Bank-administered Reconstruction Trust Fund for Afghanistan, a decision that U.S. officials said would allow for the disbursement of roughly $650 million to $700 million in suspended U.S. aid.

The United States and other big donors stopped paying into the fund in June, when the International Monetary Fund suspended its program with Afghanistan because of concerns about Afghanistan's troubled Kabul Bank.?
